On arrival, all vehicles are weighed to establish their net payload. When weighed, vehicles proceed to an elevated platform to offl oad via a hopper into a Kaoussis HAS 60 56m³ transfer trailer.
The waste is compressed to the rear of the trailer on receipt of each fresh waste load, until the trailer is fully loaded.
The port city also operates two Kaoussis HAS 46 46m³ rear- loading transfer trailers, which are used as backup when the two HAS 60 56m³ rear top loading waste transfer trailers are full.
All of the trailers are pulled by a pair of MAN TGS 4x2 tractor units. The largest sanitary landfi ll site in Europe
Once the trailers have been loaded, they are transported at 6am by the drivers of the MAN TGS 4x2 tractor units to the largest sanitary landfi ll site in Europe, the Fyli site, in Ano Liosia.
The Fyli landfi ll site is operated by EDSNA, the solid waste management authority responsible for waste management for the entire region of Attica.
The commingled dry mixed recyclables collected from the blue- coloured 1000-litre containers across Piraeus, are delivered to EDSNA’S EMAK facility in Ano Liosia.
Here, materials are separated using both manual and mechanical techniques. The materials are then baled ready for exporting to processors.
The development of Piraeus’s own waste transfer station has improved the effi ciency of waste collection rounds. This has also helped to reduce carbon emissions in the satellite waste collection vehicles, by not having to travel long distances to discharge their loads.
The Port of Piraeus provides an innovative and sustainable waste collection system. This has been achieved through maximising productivity and by reviewing mileage for each collection vehicle.
Collection vehicles’ fuel consumption, fuel usage, and repair and maintenance costs, are continually monitored to reduce external operating costs .
Experts gather for TruTac & Silk- Thread’s Earned Recognition event
LEADING industry experts, Beverley Bell, CBE, former Senior Traffi c Commissioner and Philip Lapczuk, Product Specialist at Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) spoke at a recent Earned Recognition seminar in Leamington Spa.
The event was hosted by Labyrinth Logistics Consulting Ltd, the creators of SilkThread®, the award-winning operator licence management system provider and TruTac, the UK’s leading tachograph analysis company. Over 50 representatives from the country’s foremost vehicle operators attended to hear how DVSA Earned Recognition works, and learned about pilot policies and processes relevant to the scheme.
Earned Recognition is a current industry ‘hot topic’. The DVSA is promoting the voluntary scheme for vehicle operators, as a new way to prove they meet driver and vehicle standards, by regularly sharing performance information with DVSA. In return, vehicles are less likely to be stopped for roadside inspections.
Philip Lapczuk from the DVSA, presented an overview of the Earned Recognition concept, along with entry requirements and the department’s plans for the pilot.
Beverley Bell detailed her thoughts on why earned recognition is important for transport, and presented a compelling case for a ‘joined-up’ approach to best practice industry standards.
During the day, attendees took the opportunity to ask both Philip and Beverley a variety of questions relating to Earned Recognition, and asked about their thoughts regarding several pilot policies.

Event host Ruth Waring, Managing Director of Labyrinth Logistics Consulting, presented the high-level auditing processes for Earned Recognition pilot participants and outlined the numerous benefi ts available from the scheme.
“The event was a great success, “ said Ruth. “It provided food for thought for all those who attended.”
