Great Scott - Polar explorers, drawings saved for the nation
A story about a couple of old chalk penguin drawings on two blackboards did the rounds on Facebook and Twitter recently.
But these weren’t any old scribbles, and they were drawn by famous polar explorers Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton during a lecture on 1 Dec 1904 at Manchester’s Whitworth Hall.
However, the drawings, which were both signed, were thought lost until they were found virtually undamaged in a skip in the 1950s and now reside in the Scott Polar Museum, in Cambridge.
Museum Conservator, Sophie Rowe (Below) said: “The blackboards have been stored in cases made of wood and MDF with Perspex fronts for protection.”
Since rehousing the boards, they have been cleaned up, repaired and old mould spots and cobwebs have been removed.
Checking over Robert Scott’s drawing, Sophie and her team found a ghostly yellow stain when put under ultra violet.
She added: “It turns out that this is an old fi xative that was applied to the chalk a long time ago, but only on this blackboard. Weirdly it makes the penguin look as if it is surrounded by the Southern Lights!
“The blackboards are now happily hanging in the museum but the jury is still out on which cartoon is better! It’s probably safe to say that Scott and Shackleton were both better at polar exploration than they were at drawing.”
