Tamworth skip fi rm fi ned £60,000 after driver crushed

MAC SKIP Hire Limited, Tamworth, have been fi ned £60,000 after employee Beverley Upton was crushed to death between two vehicles two and a half years ago.

The 45-year-old Barwell mum got out of her cab on November 4 2015, to try and pull away a piece of dangling carpet.

Her manager, Steve Lunn, driving a Caterpillar shovel loader, did not realise Beverley was there and moved in to remove overhanging waste.

Giving evidence at an inquest in September 2016, Steve said: “A piece of carpet about four foot long was over the side of the lorry, and the other end was buried in the muck in the back of the lorry. I tried cutting the carpet with the bucket, but it wasn’t successful.”

Beverley came out of her tipper truck to help during loading, and she was not wearing a hard hat or visibility jacket.

She was pressed between the bucket of the loader and her tipper truck, suff ering massive internal injuries which killed her instantly.

An HSE investigation found MAC Skip Hire failed to implement site rules for loading operations at the site, breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. The company was

fi ned £60,000, and ordered to pay costs of £14,500.

Speaking after the hearing, HSE inspector Mark Austin said: “This was a tragic and wholly avoidable incident, caused by the failure to ensure that basic site controls and rules were being managed and enforced.”

Unique Burns Supper in summer to toast legendary Torbay hotel was inspired by Skip Hire & Waste story

A LEADING fi gure in the Irish waste and recycling sector is planning a famous send off for the famed Harbour Light Restaurant in Paignton.

CIWM Northern Ireland's Peter Johnston, Chairman of McCreath Taylor (NI) Limited, is organising what he describes as a ‘get together’ of industry fi gures at 7PM in the soon-to-be-closed restaurant on Friday, June 1.

The one-night-only social event will incorporate a unique Burns supper, and was inspired by Skip Hire & Waste Magazine's recent Torbay Memories articles by our own contributor Timothy Byrne.

Peter came up with the idea of a celebration send-off event after Timothy, who is based in Dudley, West Midlands and attended the now legendary IWM International Waste Exhibition in Torbay for many years, recounted (right) how popular the event was, in the 22 years it was held between 1987 to 2008.

Northern Irishman Peter said: “I have no doubt there will be some big names from the waste recycling in attendance. The idea is to mark the closure of the famous Harbour Light restaurant."

“The event will be a great opportunity for previous attendees of the CIWM conferences who visited Torbay over the years, and the evening will be a platform for guests to catch up and to network.”

The Burns supper, usually held in January, will off er four-to- fi ve courses and the traditional haggis, ‘neeps and tatties’. The remarkable evening event will be completed by a piper, who will perform the tradition piping in of the haggis.

THE Institute of Wastes Management popular (IWM) International Waste Management Exhibition was held at Torbay for 22 years continuously, from 1987 to the fi nal show in 2008.

We’ve been raiding our contributor Timothy Byrne’s scrapbook to publish a few sun-soaked snaps from the late lamented Torbay event during the mid 1990s, when the event was held in the second week of June.

Torbay was a great location because of the mild climate, seaside location and abundance of hotels, restaurants and venues – useful for more than a small amount of networking and socialising during the event.

Funded by IWM, it was heavily backed by the local Council, which provided the Greens/seaside promenade to the Institute for the exhibition to take place.

The 1994 exhibition was an International exhibition in conjunction with the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), while the 1995 exhibition was hosted by the IWM and headlined as the Institute of Wastes Management Annual Conference and Exhibition.
