Boughton: bold, bullish & British


BOUGHTON Engineering are Britain’s longest-established and only major generic manufacturer of hook loaders and skip loaders. The wholly British, private family-owned West Midlands enterprise continues to deliver on their commitments to the market, and has gone from strength to strength since the business was bought by Skan Group Holdings.


Some operators have been known to re-chassis Boughton equipment after a fi rst life of 10 years, then run units for a second 10-year cycle, and after that, grant the unit an honourable ‘retirement’ for fi ve years as a yard shunter. Boughton Sales and Marketing Director, Steve Price said: “It is good to see an independent all British company proving successful against the big international players. “End users tell us – particularly in London – that ‘being seen to drive the fl ag’ fi nds strong favour with their customer bases. The rental and leasing companies like us too because the product is solid, reliable and we don’t make unnecessary changes.” Boughton’s now mature Power Reach range of skip loaders continues to gain year-on-year market share, with the signifi cant majority of operators choosing


to specify the Intacova integrated sheeting system. The Intacova design mitigates and protects against sheeter componentry damage during loading and unloading operations – a particular vulnerability issue with sheeting systems. The company also continues to off er a premium specifi cation close-coupled trailer, which is popular with end users where operating patterns can benefi t from running at optimised payloads. Boughton has always strived to retain direct control of design, build, manufacturing quality, and aftermarket support – in-house. In recent years, Boughton doubled its current exclusively UK-based workforce, both at the expanded North Devon fabrication facilities and at their main Wolverhampton engineering and fi nal assembly plant. This year has also seen a signifi cant investment in the service and parts operation – in terms of people, resources and facilities. Group Deputy Chairman and Managing Director, Richard Skan said: “We are not and never have been complacent in our continuous eff orts to support the market and our customers – and to adapt to changing circumstances as they may


aff ect both them and ourselves. “As a wholly-owned UK-based British company, we’re aware of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) challenges facing all companies over Brexit, but we’re ready for whatever circumstances emerge and whichever direction the UK heads next year. “We are competitive and confi dently expect that future opportunities will outweigh any negative impact. “A further factor in our thinking at the present time is the way in which other currencies have moved compared with our own – making imported product more expensive, and we’ll keep these factors under continuous review. “The arrangements which we’re developing at the current time will also serve to strengthen our growing activities in Ireland – north and south – and will develop irrespective of how the Irish border situation is resolved as part of Brexit.” The company is absent from this year’s RWM show, a decision shared with many other handling and equipment sector manufacturers who believe that, while there may be a place for a UK show, it should be every two years – and alternate with the main European event, IFAT.
