New West Gypsum UK aiming for zero plasterboard waste in landfill
EARLIER this year, the world leader in plasterboard recycling, New West Gypsum Recycling UK moved to new premises in Weston-Super-Mare, which is fi ve times larger than the company’s previous Bristol site.
One of the main reasons for the move was to improve the processing plant, and as a result, the company have now increased effi ciency through recycling even more gypsum than ever before. The company prides itself in being the fi rst recycler in the UK to truly recycle gypsum in a closed-loop solution, and have done so across the globe for over 33 years.
New West Gypsum Recycling UK’s Toni Williams said: “As a group we all work towards the same goal of zero waste to landfi ll, while working within the constraints of the individual country’s needs. “Although it was intensive we managed to strip down, refurb and replace the vital components of the recycling plant and move it to our new premises within four months. “We’re currently processing an average of 5,200 tonnes of gypsum per month; about a third more than we were able to do in Bristol and we off er more fl exibility to accept the waste coming in.” The company enable recovery of gypsum from building construction and renovations sites, as well as production scrap from drywall manufacturers. Gypsum, a soft sulfate mineral, can be recycled forever with no degradation to the end product, and all of New West Gypsum’s product goes to the manufacture of wallboard. With a long-term goal of alleviating all plasterboard waste from landfi ll, the South West-based company are a world leader in recycling both wet and dry gypsum as effi ciently and eff ectively as possible. Worldwide, New West Gypsum recycling has the capacity to recycle about a million tonnes of the colourless-to-white material per year.
