feature article A New Frontier? Sarah-Jane Ellis explores energy medicine
In recent years there has been an increasing interest in energy medicine. It has even been described as ‘the next big frontier in medicine’ by the Director of the Cardiovascular Institute at
Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, Mehmet Oz MD. He is so convinced by its effectiveness that he has energy medicine practitioners working alongside him in the operating theatre. But the concept of energy medicine is not new.
Nobel Laureate in Medicine, Albert Szent-Gyorgyi MD, points out that ‘In every culture and in every medical tradition before ours, healing was accomplished by moving energy’. Our subconscious is already deeply familiar with this concept: for example, it often prompts us to clasp our foreheads when stressed, or touch certain points on the head – actions which bring blood to the forebrain, calming our nervous system and helping us to think more clearly! According to US pioneer of energy medicine,
Donna Eden, ‘Energy is the foundation of physical and emotional health’. Eden Energy Medicine is based on her methods and it’s now available here in the Chilterns. The work integrates techniques from acupuncture, yoga, kinesiology and qi gong with contemporary scientific understanding of health and healing. It accesses and influences the body’s energy systems in various ways including touching, twisting or connecting specific energy points on the skin; moving the hand over the body along energy pathways; and through specific exercises.
Verifiable results Clinical psychologist and former sceptic, David Feinstein (who also happens to be Eden’s husband) admits that while baffled, he constantly saw clients improve, even those with serious medical conditions such as multiple sclerosis or diabetes. ‘The results weren’t instantaneous – but gradual, clear, verifiable cures happened often enough that I took notice.’ Feinstein now believes that changing impaired
energy patterns ‘may be the most efficient, least invasive way to improve the vitality of organs, cells, and psyche’. Based on the understanding that the body is designed to heal itself, energy medicine can be used by everyone to address health issues and promote a sense of well-being. It’s also easy to learn. Our energy anatomy flows in partnership with the body’s cells, tissues and organs. Energy is our life
force, dancing and weaving in and around the body. When it’s moving freely and in sync, we think clearly, our immune system is strong and we feel connected to life. However, when it’s disturbed or blocked, we feel lethargic and are more susceptible to illness. We may also feel disconnected, stuck and lonely. The existence of energy pathways in and around
the body that influence our mental and emotional wellbeing has been scientifically confirmed. For example, experiments run by Professor Valerie Hunt of UCLA’s Human Energy Fields Laboratory, showed that electrical oscillations of a far higher frequency than ever previously detected on the body were emitted from points specifically associated with the chakras. Hunt also discovered that certain healers could identify when changes in these measured frequencies happened by observing an individual’s energies – they could actually see changes in the chakra colours. I came to study Eden Energy Medicine for a
deeper understanding of my own energy and how to work with my internal and external environment. I wanted to be happier, healthier and feel vital. In an increasingly stressful and uncertain world, I believe it’s time that we all pay more attention to how we feel. Energy medicine can be the start of a conscious relationship with our body’s energy systems which is both empowering and transformative.
