Creating a little magic

MERLIN Entertainments, the owner of UK attractions including Madame Tussauds and Alton Towers, is to bring Peppa Pig attractions and themed accommodation to fans of the cartoon pig around the world.

As the world’s second-largest visitor attraction operator, Merlin now operates more than 100 attractions, 15 hotels and six holiday villages in 24 countries.

The Lexicon Bracknell

The £240m new retail and leisure development in the heart of Bracknell is one of the largest urban regeneration schemes in the UK. The town centre has been transformed by The Bracknell Regeneration Partnership, a joint venture between Legal & General Capital and Schroder UK Real Estate Fund, working with Bracknell Forest Council.

As part of a new licensing deal with Entertainment One, the operator plans to create fully branded, standalone attractions in different formats as well as branded areas within existing Merlin Resort Theme Parks, with the first new attractions expected to open in 2019.

In this issue, we look at what it takes to bring popular brands such as Peppa Pig to life in themed hotels. The architecture and interiors practice, The Manser Practice, was commissioned by Merlin Entertainments to design and deliver the Lego family hotel, at the Legoland Windsor Resort, as well as the CBeebies Land Hotel at Alton Towers Resort.

Chris Jeffcoate, associate director at The Manser Practice, explains the meticulous design and minute detail required to transport both older and younger guests into these themed worlds, while ensuring the hotel runs smoothly without guests being aware of what is going on behind the scenes.

“The theming has been considered at every stage and is truly woven into the fabric of the building. We worked closely alongside Merlin Magic Making to coordinate the project from inception to completion, harmonising layouts and design and build elements with the artistic theming and interior design to ensure that every construction detail would work with custom graphic wallpaper and complex 3D theming,” explains Jeffcoate.
