1 Lancashire Planning Boards The planning boards provide children with a structure to be able to carry out fair test investigations. Used effectively they can provide a supportive framework, encourage collaboration or promote
independent learning when children plan their science investigations. Laminated, they can either be used as a write on/wipe off board or with post it notes. Available in two different sizes (A1 or A3) each set of four boards focuses on the following content:
Explore: to get the children inquisitive and asking questions they want to investigate further.
Plan: It is only by carrying out a fair test that children can be sure that it is what has been changed (independent variable) that is affecting what is measured (dependent variable).
Do: Giving children a choice of how the results could be collected.
Interpret & Evaluate: Scaffolded prompts to get the children thinking about what makes a scientifi c conclusion.
