The Promo Column
Let’s get cosy O
n top of the lack of heat, we’re still feeling our way through the latest wave of COVID, hoping that fingers crossed, we’re coming out the other side in better shape.
Always one to look on the bright side of life (doo doo, doo doo, doo doo, doo doo…) I’ll be first to remind you that we are in a better position than last year with our vaccines and boosters, and the economy starting to get back to pre-pandemic levels. Let’s not curse it, but hopefully things can only get better (you can sing that one yourselves). Here’s hoping for a warmer spring at any rate as we’re all set to be hit by soaring energy prices in April. Ofgem’s review of the energy price cap is predicted to add up to 50% to our bills, which will leave many of us looking for ways to make savings.
Helpful
Just to be helpful, an energy company recently sent thousands of customers pairs of branded socks along with useful tips on how to stay warm without busting your budget. These included ideas like cuddling a pet and doing star jumps which were met with outrage from customers anticipating bills next year that you tip over two grand.
It’s a shame that this will probably go down as a lesson in how not to use merchandise, because promotional socks have been one of my favourite items of recent years. I’ve probably got enough pens and bags for life to last me the rest of my natural, but socks are actually useful. And they can look great, as Bosscher International’s ‘happy socks’ demonstrate. The hip casual socks can feature a company logo or in-house design and are a fashion item in their own right. The Dutch company has approximately 160 colours in stock, and for orders of 120 pairs or more, it can produce the Oeko- Tex cotton socks within two weeks. Its design studio creates a free design for each order so you customers can put their best foot forward.

It is a bit of a cold start to the year in more ways than one. The weather is often more bitter in these pre-spring months than at the end of the calendar year. Promotional products commentator, Stuart Derrick, takes a look at some winter warmers.
mail campaign and MOQs are from as little as 250 units.
If a brand is using a beverage in its marketing then a mug makes the obvious companion. Branding on mugs is a given, but how about taking things to the next level with individually named drinking vessels? That way people will never lose their very own mug and if they are working from home, they’ll feel extra specially valued.

Speaking of staying warm, Tommy Cooper once thanked a cabbie by slipping something into his top pocket ‘for a drink’. Later, on fishing out what he thought would be a fat tip, the hapless driver found a tea bag instead.
Which just goes to show that you should never assume – unless it’s that Brits like tea.
On to a winner
So, you’re probably on to a winner with branded teabags, as offered by drinks specialist Justadrop. Its tea sachets can be branded with your company logo in full colour, and it can even brand the tea bag tag for added brand recall (or should that be tea call?).
This economical device is also inexpensive to post as part of a direct
Total Merchandise can add a company logo and an individual name to one of its Sparta mugs for a minimum order of just 36. As the company points out, personalising promotional mugs with the names of your colleagues has an additional benefit of helping prevent inadvertent cross-contamination in the workplace. This, in turn, can make your office, school, or retail environment feel more COVID-secure.
Hygge
Our good friends at Fluid branding have even put together a range of products designed to give us a sense of what the Scandinavians call hygge.
Its Cosy at Home selection includes some great products that can be used to create care packages for your customers or employees and they are a practical way to make a positive impact on their mental health during what can be a gloomy time for many.
Boosting their morale helps to show that you care and will act as a motivator to keep them on track when things get tough. As well as some of the items we have already mentioned, Cosy at Home also include blankets, hot water bottles, candles, bath sets and teddy bears. I bet you’re feeling warmer already.
Items can be selected, colour co-ordinated to the company’s requirements, placed in a designed box with optional wrapping, and despatched to recipients.

It should be enough to get them through the worst of the winter and on to planning for their summer holidays – wherever we are allowed to go this year!
