Flying Theatres
HEXaFLITE 72
NEW HEXaFLITE 2.0 with 72 guests, Simtec Systems Andreas adds that clients are looking for latest
projection techniques or LED screens to provide a first-class guest experience, “with the spherical LED screens in particular bringing the flying theatre attraction to a new quality level.” Kevin Murphy, senior vice president sales &
business development, Kraftwerk Living Technologies (KLT) says: “Whilst we can offer our clients several complete turnkey media-based products we have the privilege to work on the side of some of the most talented and most experienced ride system manufacturers for flying theatres and film makers. The last year has been no different with two theatres being completely installed and opened during the pandemic and another theatre opening that was installed just prior to the shutdown in Qatar. “Our key expertise at KLT is in the technology – the
media playback, specialist projection screen or LED and display technology, special lens development including blending and alignment, audio, as well as special effects (SFX) behind any Flying Theatres,” he says. Kevins tells me that KLT is “used to being part of an experienced team often working with an end

client that may not have worked on a project like this before and our skills have taken many years to develop – the expertise and techniques to make every opening reliable and magical and more important, keeping the performance of the system over many years. We should make the point, that this is the same for any media-based attraction we work on from a flying theater to a dark ride or a turnkey transforming Hybrid Dome or 5D Theater!” Mike Frueh, senior vice president, licensing and
distribution, SimEx-Iwerks Entertainment comments: “Flying Theatres are now more affordable and can be located in smaller theme parks and moderate traffic destinations. And with the availability of different licensed content options, bespoke films are not as essential. “We have benefited from having FlyRide clients that
are exceptional operators. Their detailed feedback has led to new system capabilities to enhance the guest experience and control system features that improve operational efficiencies. In addition, Covid travel restrictions resulted in new remote monitoring and maintenance capabilities that have provided on-going service and maintenance benefits.”
Getting it right “We have said this before and our message is consistent, but when it comes to the technology in any media-based attraction, we tend to apply innovation, quality, reliability, and budget as key criteria when we start,” says KLT’s Kevin Murphy. “From the early days of any project, we get involved with the ride and client team to review the ride layout with the screen, and whilst the technical elements again are important, we actually start with the ride experience and giving every rider ‘the best seat in the house’. Projection or LED displays, we carefully position the guests in relation to the screen and a lot of work goes into the initial design and display options. “Whilst we are using LED a lot more and have
provided some very complex dome screens, again during the pandemic, the predominant technology is still 2D projection for a great family experience. We have developed our multiple projector designs and blending along with the screen surface technology to give superb results. We need a system that gives the quality but works reliably for many shows a day, every day for many years and that takes engineering.” Since their creation Flying Theatres have been
