Efteling reopens and begins celebrations for its 70th anniversary

E

fteling – the fairytale theme park in the south of Holland – is now open following the easing of lockdown restrictions in the Netherlands on 26 January.

The reopening of the park marks the start of its 70th birthday in 2022 with celebrations taking place throughout the year.

The jubilee year has kicked off with the opening of new ride Sirocco, which offers a dizzying boat ride in spinning merchant boats for all ages which is in a newly themed ‘Sindbad the Sailor’ area of the park. A second new attraction, Archipel, an exciting island of adventure for children to explore, will also be opening early this year.

At the beginning of February, decorations will go up around the park, which will include a party hat on the iconic Efteling character Langnek. At 4pm every day, party music will be played around the park and park visitors will be encouraged to join in the celebrations. From April until October, an extra special pop-up fairytale will be created on the Speelweide playing field in the heart of the park that will offer an exclusive experience for visitors of all ages.

LEGOLAND Germany is 20!

LEGOLAND Germany is celebrating its 20th birthday this year. The family theme park will begin its 2022 season on 2 April.

As the LEGOLAND park opened its gates for the first time on 17 May 2002, the month of May has been designated as the main month for anniversary celebrations. The “absolute highlight” of the anniversary celebrations will be the

premiere of the worldwide first LEGOLAND parade. LEGOLAND event director Martin Lubitzsch said: “Currently teams of designers and experienced experts are designing and building wagons at different locations across Germany. This is all still top secret, but it will be a spectacle that will excite not only LEGO fans! We are already looking forward to the moment, when the first parade wagon will turn the corner and make children eyes shine.”

The LEGOLAND Park mascots, which have been popular among fans young and old since the park first opened, will play a key role in the parade with new members joining the family for the anniversary season. Twelve new, popular mascots will increase the number of LEGO characters to over 20 for the first. A spectacular, multimedia pirate show will take place in the LEGO Arena in July and August. The most famous pirate captains of the world will compete – a sword fighter, springboard artists and a woman that breathes fire are only a small part of the action-packed programme.

LEGOLAND classic, The Long Nights meanwhile, will return on 30 July, 6 and 13 August.

Halloween will start on 1 October with long Saturday Halloween Nights and “beautiful-spooky action”, including a new 4D-Halloween-Movie in the LEGO Studios.

The action-packed anniversary season will close on 6 November. 10

Legacy Designed Shanghai Ocean Park wins major award

Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park, the Chinese developer Haichang’s flagship property, has been named “2021’s Most Popular Attraction” at this year’s China Cultural Tourism Innovation and

Development Forum. At the ceremony, which was held last month in Langfang, China, Haichang also received awards for its leadership and Social Responsibility initatives. Designed by Hollywood-based Legacy Entertainment, currently celebrating its 20th anniversary year, the 73-acre marine life park has been a strong performer since its debut in 2018, drawing over 3,000,000 visitors a year prior to the pandemic. This latest recognition comes atop a slew of awards bestowed upon the park. In 2020, the Golden Crown Awards named Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park “Outstanding Themed Land Park”, “Outstanding Family Entertainment Center”, and “Outstanding Social Media Famous Tourist Attraction”. Prior to that, the project had been named “Best Theme Park” by China’s largest theme park organization, CAAPA (Chinese Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions).

The $730,000,000 USD park was designed by Legacy Entertainment, a leading creator of large-scale aquarium, oceanarium, and zoological projects. “There are few things more challenging to build and operate well than a marine life theme park,” said Taylor Jeffs, Legacy Entertainment’s president and chief creative officer. “The continued recognition of the Haichang team will hopefully serve as an inspiration to owners and operators all around the world.”

Later this year will see the opening of two all-new aquarium complexes designed by Legacy Entertainment, including the Chimelong Marine Science Park. Located in Zhuhai, China, the park will serve as a second gate to the popular Chimelong Ocean Kingdom next door. With over 4,000,000 of interior space, the park will claim the record of ‘World’s Largest Indoor Theme Park’ upon its debut. Legacy is also set to make a splash with the firm’s first project in Vietnam- the Sea Shell aquarium located within the new VinWonders Theme Park on Phu Quoc Island. Slated to be the country’s largest aquarium, the colossal turtle-shaped facility will also set new standards for animal husbandy in the region
