Although one issue with squeezing so much in one space is the audio from adjoining scenes can often be overheard in the next.
Ofcourse no IP in a park is complete without a shop, and guests leave Gangsta Granny: The Ride through Raj’s Shop. Raj being a character from the book, who owns a shop. There’s plenty of humour just walking through the shop, with staff fitting in the role of Raj’s assistants. Elsewhere guests can take a spin on the wonderfully named, Flavio’s Fabulous Fandango, a Sizzler ride that’s
popular at funfairs throughout the UK. It’s a travelling model made by PWS and belongs to the showman George Burrows but has received additional theming and decorations to fit in with its location.
The two other rides making up
The World of David Walliams have been at the park since the 1990’s but have been reimagined to fit in with their newest surroundings with appropriate colour schemes. Raj’s Bouncy Bottom Burp is an S&S Sansei Frog Hopper mini drop tower. Whilst the Royal Carousel is a Bertazzon Carousel.
More than just rides
There are more than just the rides bringing the area to life. The surrounding buildings have all been decorated with the same whimsical caricature style found in the books. But an even bigger part of what brings it all together is the roaming costume characters. The Beefeaters and Royal Guards are on hand to bring humour to the day, interacting with guests, posing for photos and unexpectedly breaking out in to choreographed routines.
Building an area around an IP is always tricky; what if guests don’t know it? But with the World of David Walliams, Alton Towers has created an area, and a flagship attraction, that can be enjoyed as much by those who’ve never read any of the books, as those who bury themselves in every one of his stories. The new land was due to open in 2020 but was abruptly halted just a couple of days before its big debut thanks to the UK going in to its first full lockdown. But the delay may just have worked in their favour, the pandemic lead to book sales hitting an eight year high in the UK, with the young and old rediscovering a love of books, with Walliam’s stories amongst them. What better way to enjoy coming out of lockdown than experiencing the stories you fell in love with, in real life? And there’s no doubt that Alton Towers has created a marvellous World of David Walliams for families to escape in to.
SUMMER PART 4 2021
The ride
captures the humour of the books too, who wouldn’t laugh when Granny farts whilst diving under water creating a trail of bubbles?
