Pushing the edge of adventure and reality
Frontgrid is a global provider of innovative adventure experiences for leisure and entertainment operators. In a conversation with Park World editor, Becci Knowles, co-founder and chief executive Matt Wells reflects on the success of the company’s flagship product, ParadropVR and offers a sneak peek of what’s coming up next.

ince its launch in 2017, ParadropVR has been purchased and operated by leading entertainment brands at FEC’s and indoor theme parks around the world. A thrilling example of cutting-edge VR entertainment, it lists VR Park Dubai, Tridom Landmark Group India, TEKZONE Jeddah, Genting Highlands Resort Malaysia, and Universe Science Park in Denmark among its credits.
Matt explains that in this “an unrivalled visitor experience”, guests are immersed in a “hyper- realistic” flying experience thanks to a combination of high-quality media, physical sensation, audio and interactive gameplay. Guests become the hero of their own adventure as they steer their flight, experiencing a full range of physical sensations as they dive, twist and turn through the skies. According to Matt, this not only makes the experience more memorable, “but unique for every guest”.
Fliers can choose from five adrenaline-fuelled games which see them flying through a range of environments, collecting points by flying through targets as they soar through the skies, with their results being recorded on a digital competitive leader board on the ParadropVR mobile app.

This makes it ideal for operators that run esport tournaments and events.
The product of choice “What makes ParadropVR stand out is its proven commercial model, coupled with its unrivalled visitor experience,” says Matt. “A social attraction, it appeals to groups of all ages including families and young adults. It is a proven crowd-puller which attracts players time and again, increasing both ticket sales and dwell time at the location.” ParadropVR was voted the Best FEC Project for its success at VR Park Dubai, TEKZONE Jeddah, Universe Science Park and iFLY Basingstoke. At the 2020 Park World Excellence Awards. ParadropVR City Flyer was also a finalist for VR Out of Home Experience of the Year in the 2020 VR Awards. The product is now in nine countries around the world and growing. Matt continues: “Installations like ParadropVR are going to be vital to draw crowds back to FEC locations post COVID, offering something new. FECs will also want to make the most of dwell time, ParadropVR can be both the main attraction or capitalise on foyer time. Recent award successes also prove it’s leading the market.”
Frontgrid finished installing PaaradropVR at the Oasis in Doha during the pandemic. A further two products have been sold in the Ukraine and are due to open this year. “The product has been selling throughout the pandemic and we’ve still got a lot of people interested in buying it,” says Matt.
Coming soon! With Frontgrid having spent the whole of the pandemic working on and developing ParadropVR, there are some exciting things to come. Matt explains, “We are about to launch a new exciting game for the product which is involves a whole load of new characters, meaning you can select the character you want to be and you can then fly as that character on the product. It’s going to be multi player VR as well, so you can play with other players in the same environment.” While Matt is keeping tight lipped on the detail, he also reveals “we’ve got some hardware announcements later in the year; it’s a new piece of hardware that’s a lot smaller in height, more modular, and easier to install. We are starting to release the news on that in the coming weeks.”
