Cover story www.parkworld-online.com

In April 2016, HTC and Valve released their headset, named the ‘VIVE’. The headset uses “room scale” tracking technology, allowing the user full 360° movement in a three-dimensional space and the use of motion-tracked handheld controllers to interact with the environment. This full motion, full access capability was a pivotal improvement over the previous headsets as it opened the door for endless possibilities for the next wave of developers.

Enter HOLOGATE

HOLOGATE was one of the very fi rst companies to seize on this timely opportunity with the launch of its very fi rst system, ‘ARENA’, and its fi rst multiplayer game, ‘Simurai’. It was the perfect formula of utilising the ‘Vive’ headsets full-motion range, while integrated into their proprietary open-framed multiplayer system while players experience an out-of-this world immersive space battle with their friends.

Released in 2017 at the IAAPA Global Expo, HOLOGATE ‘ARENA’ found immediate success with the selling of 73 units in four days, becoming an overnight success and setting the high bar of virtual reality within the FEC and LBE space.

Today, with over 400+ systems in 36 countries worldwide, and reaching more than 10 million players, HOLOGATE is operating the largest VR network in the world. Having the largest network affords HOLOGATE the ability to help drive current and future trends as they are often given early access to the latest emerging technologies. By experimenting with these cutting-edge technologies, they can continually develop new platforms and experiences that will actively shape the future of family entertainment.

This is what enabled HOLOGATE to develop a system that would bring virtual reality attractions to the next level. In 2019, HOLOGATE BLITZ was premiered. The fi rst-ever VR motion simulator with completely synchronous motion-to-visual pairing which eliminated motion sickness found in traditional simulators, a noiseless belt driven transmission, and up to 1 meter of vertical lift and ±30° movement in every direction, had become yet another evolutionary moment for virtual reality. HOLOGATE also identifi ed early on that when working with virtual reality, creating a ‘social experience’ as compared to a ‘shared experience’, dramatically increased the replay value, repeat visits, and added revenue, which was also a pivotal moment for virtual reality in the FEC and LBE space.

A shared experience is one in which more than one person plays at the same time, engaging in similar gameplay, in a shared game environment, whereas a social experience, is one that takes that multiplayer or shared experience and adds a layer of engagement that may involve conversation, interaction, the consumption of food and beverage, or simply spectating, which all can create an emotional connection among the group and potentially a rich source of belonging and happiness for the individuals.

HOLOGATE integrated visual connection, voice communication, and cooperative or competitive gameplay in all of their experiences to reinforce the social experience.

Extending the VR space

To further shape this social experience concept, later this year, HOLOGATE plans to launch ‘HOLOGATE WORLD’, a fi rst of its kind, state-of-the-art, 1,200+ m2 immersive entertainment facility which will be the largest extended reality space in Germany. HOLOGATE WORLD will feature a bar, lounge with food service, and indoor and outdoor gathering areas, and feature the latest of its world-renowned virtual reality systems; revolutionary extended reality escape rooms, a competitive esports arena, and several proprietary entertainment experiences that will be making their world premieres at the opening.

HOLOGATE and its HOLOGATE WORLD fl agship location will continue to move the needle for next- generation and magical, industry-defi ning experiences by premiering its newest entertainment creations in the space that they hope will continue to raise the bar and help shape the future of entertainment.
