eadlines reflect an uncertain outlook for theme parks during what normally would be peak season due to COVID-19. While Hong

Kong Disneyland closed again, Shanghai Disneyland increased capacity from its original limit of 20% in July. With so much at stake during this unprecedented global crisis, theme parks must work extra hard to stick their landings and re-open safely. The public and park employees remain skittish, as

evidenced by petitions on and to delay reopening amidst surging cases, with signatures surpassing fifty thousand. Entertainment destinations must address key concerns to reverse the damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic and do their part to keep everyone safe while reopening and beyond. Below are recommended measures to overcome the challenges and ensure guest loyalty, safety and attendance for the long term. They fall under several of the significant pillars of themed entertainment: technologies; operations; entertainment content; and communications. By implementing strategies for each, theme parks can move toward profitability once again and keep the magic alive.

Technologies The entryway experience is crucial as it sets the tone for the rest of the park visit. While digital temperature guns may be ideal in clinical settings, contactless thermometer kiosks are better suited for entertainment destinations as they can screen guests accurately and

efficiently without being intrusive. They are also more cost-effective since staff members are not required to operate the health check-in process, and instead can oversee the process and ensure guests abide by social distancing guidelines. Inside the park, contactless ride entry solutions,

such as pass checking and touchless screens, should also be implemented if not already in place. These solutions uphold new health and safety measures while streamlining the guest experience. Operators should also install technology to manage traffic patterns and wayfinding beyond guest counters and social distance guidelines. Advanced cleaning precautions should also be applied for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Beyond physical park upgrades, operators should

consider using virtual reality to allow guests and employees to tour and walk through destinations prior to their visit to understand the implemented health and safety measures at the parks.

Operations Theme parks and integrated resorts cannot afford to fumble their re-opening or delay them much longer. It is critical that entertainment destinations conduct an audit of their hours of admission, grounds, facilities, and other occupiable spaces to prepare for strategic operational changes. This step is crucial for properly mapping out capacity and social distancing measures to ensure safety for all.

With all these

new health and safety measure, leisure attractions must continue to emphasise entertainment and the guest experience to keep the magic alive.
