The

invisible partner

Ryan Miziker has several decades of experience leading the world’s top show designers and creative teams to develop successful media-based attractions and entertainment experiences. Capitalizing on his extensive professional experience, he understands how to create or translate intellectual properties into successful leisure destinations, and create new stories and characters for use in multi-platform experiences.

F

ull service creative design and production company Miziker Entertainment specialises in being invisible. Whether its for a theme park’s nighttime spectacular, a

Halloween horror maze or the superbowl halftime show, the team aims to leave absolutely no trace of their work - no hint at all that the world of the attraction is fabricated - so all that visitors are left with is the magic of a totally immersive environment. Bryony Andrews spoke to Ryan Miziker, creative director, producer and project director at Miziker Entertainment

Where is Miziker currently based, and what is a brief description of the services you provide? We are based in Burbank, California. We specialise in live shows and parades, media production, and creative development for destination leisure entertainment.

Has Miziker changed in purpose since its initial launch? Miziker Entertainment is celebrating its 34th year, and the third anniversary of what we call ‘Miziker 2.0’, when the ownership and executive leadership of the company changed to myself and Charlotte Huggins as partners. Our focus is creative design and development of both live shows and parades as well as media production for location based entertainment. Because our shows can happen anywhere, our motto is, ‘All the World’s Our Stage!’

In what ways have shows and spectaculars

evolved in Miziker’s lifetime? Once upon a time there was a clear distinction between filmed entertainment and live shows or theatre. That’s no longer the case. Now, live shows often include media elements, through projection mapping, LED fixtures, or water

screens, and the shared experience of ‘going to the movies’ has been replaced by live shows, immersive theatre, music and art installations. We love the chance to use all the tools in the storyteller’s technological toolbox to create compelling and immersive show experiences. In recent years, live shows have become bigger, more exciting, and more memorable.

Your Journey of Lights Parade at Chimelong Ocean Kingdom received a Thea Award this year - what made this project stand out so vividly? We wanted to create a beautiful nighttime parade for Chimelong’s Ocean Kingdom. But that wasn’t enough. We knew we had the opportunity to create something that pushed the boundaries of what was possible, and we are thrilled that Chimelong supported us in this mission. We are proud of many of the innovations in the Journey of Lights Parade, but the thing that stands out is what we call the Parade Wide Event. By using all programmable RGB LEDs, we were able to control every individual light to perform in perfect synchronization with the musical soundtrack and performance elements. During the 20-second Parade Wide Event, every light, including the floats, costumes and props, glimmers with white light. It’s something that has never been achieved before. It looks beautiful, and it also took a significant amount of ‘under the hood’ technology to make it possible.

What makes nighttime spectaculars such an enduring form of entertainment? To me, no day at a theme park is complete without a nighttime spectacular! It’s a ‘can’t miss’ part of the day. And more and more destinations, from resorts to stadiums, casinos to large shopping centers are including this type of show that was once only available at a Disney park. The magic of a
