Ride Profile

Old legends, new Legendia

The creative force behind Basyliszek

Alterface, Jora Vision, and ETF have joined forces with Chorzów based Legendia Park to bring a piece of Polish folklore to life. The Basilisk (or Bazyliszek in Polish) is the country’s first interactive dark ride, and Park World was lucky enough to check it out…

however, it was time for a rebranding, and Basilisk has proven that a park can take economic steps forward without losing its historical charm and inspiration. A number of different versions of the Basilisk legend exist in

L

Poland. It’s a beastly hybrid composed of a saurian, snake, and rooster with the ability to turn people to stone with a glance – think Medusa’s Silesian cousin. Dutch design company Jora Vision were responsible for

the theming and production of Basilisk and its queue areas, and had previously developed the new master plan for the park. Speaking during the press event, Jora Vision reiterated that attractions need to be bespoke, affordable, and accessible to regional parks. “The story of the Bazyliszek attraction is based on

authentic Polish folklore,” explained Simeon van Tellingen, creative director. “Guests get a specific task in the queue and pre-show and finally board a vehicle to make an exciting journey through the magical forests of Poland.” ETF Ride Systems, a member of the ETF Group, crafted the

trackless Multi mover vehicles, tailoring them the Basilisks’ unique theme. With a history of creating family attractions, all ETF rides are, where possible, interactive and customised to meet customer requirement and park aspirations. Alterface had a similar point of view; founded in 2001 and headquarted in Belgium, the Alterface team develops end-to-end interactive attractions for dark rides, spinning & duelling theatres and walkthroughs, all of which are customised to fit local cultures and traditions. CEO Benoit Cornet and his team first visited the park in

JUNE 2018

egendia made its debut as “lskie Wesołe Miasteczko”, and to this day retains the title of Poland’s largest theme park. After 50 years of operation,

2008, and oversaw the total ride development as main contractor. Alterface’s Monster Hunter Gun was designed with light

and mirror technology and plays a pivotal part in the ride experience. Recruited guests become Monster Hunters and vie for the highest score and a place in the Guild’s golden book; a co-operative competitive element encourages repeat plays and visits. Cornet went on to say: “We have been very privileged to

work together with such talented people who all went the extra mile to build a wonderful ride we can be proud of. It was often challenging to make sure everyone had time and space for their specific task, but in the end we reached the customer’s goal and hit the deadline for spring opening!” It seemed fitting that Basilisk opened its doors to visitors in

the spring. The park has been steadily blooming since initial construction in 1957 when it provided a respite for workers in the upper Silesian region. Now, there are 5 themed zones across 39 hectares, and new attractions have been popping up with increasing regularity over recent years. French-constructed coaster Tornado arrived in the park in

2007, 2016 saw the Diamond River Mine flume make a big splash, and the following year continued the trend with new zones and a stunning Vekoma coaster, Lech. The ride vividly recreates the myth of Poland’s founding, with 4 inversions, a top speed of 95 km/h, and a smooth 908m of track. So, despite being a dark ride, Basilisk is leading Legendia into a bigger and brighter future, and Pawel Cebula, CEO of Legendia, agrees: “Poland is catching up on theme park entertainment, and we are really pleased to offer such a high-tech ride specifically designed for Legendia, making it unique in its kind.”
