creates the entrance to this new area. Looking at this impressive element you’d be forgiven for thinking this is a thrilling adult coaster rather than a family ride. A 270° helix swooping low to the ground sends riders back

towards the station and over an airtime hill, which once the ride is fully settled in should create a decent floating experience. A 90° turn over the queue line entrance brings the train to a graceful S turn with a gentle pop of airtime, before diving back to ground level for a 180 degree turn around to run along the back of the station. Being very low to the ground here gives the unsettling feeling you might lose your feet. The track then hurtles up careering through a narrow gap in the roof line, giving a thrilling near miss experience. A straight run to another high banked 180° turn under the lift hill is followed by the finale, a 360° helix that starts by diving down below ground level before climbing back up and in to the brake run. Unlike most family suspended coasters, the trains on this Intamin model don’t swing freely and are rigid to the track, but the track has been well designed to prevent jarring on corners and to maintain a fluid flight like ride experience.

When looking for a new ride, Djurs Sommerland CEO Henrik B Nielsen and his brother Michael were looking for a ride aimed between Juvelen and Piraten, DrageKongen fits that bill perfectly. It has a minimum height requirement of 1.2m, meaning kids from around 6 to 7 years old are tall enough to ride with an adult. Even though it has impressive figures for a family ride, visually it doesn’t appear too intimidating and the ride experience offers an exhilarating family friendly experience where dad isn’t bored but the kids don’t get off traumatised. In the quest for perfection some tweaks are being made to

improve an already decent ride. Henrik B Nielsen expects the final ride time will be 10% quicker than at opening, resulting in a faster ride experience, particularly in the second half where it does feel like train has lost a little too much speed. As it currently stands there’s no denying this is an intense, powerful and exciting family coaster that both kids and adults love riding, meaning the whole family are thrilled by riding DrageKongen. Djurs Sommerland has definitely scored a hat trick of world-class coasters with their third Intamin coaster. Thomas Page
