Ride Profile www.parkworld-online.com

largest being from 12 metres and one being a backwards drop – there is also a speed curve to thrill guests of all ages. It is clear to see that this attraction is completely bespoke, providing a unique surprise for passengers and moving away from the traditional log flume layout. John Davies, commercial director at Interlink, is proud of

the unique design they were able to produce. He said: “Tayto Park were looking for a unique and exciting ride design which nobody else had and we were able to provide that by combining several special features together on one ride for the first time.” The extensive theming work that has been undertaken to

Over 50 builders and engineers have been working on

the attraction every day, even using Viking construction methods to make the ride as authentic as possible. To ensure that authenticity was at the center of Viking Voyage, Tayto Park also employed Viking experts from Sweden. Over 10,000 tonnes of concrete and 500 tonnes of steel

have gone into the construction of Viking Voyage, with over 60,000 man-hours having gone in to the completion of the ride. The super flume track is 700m and takes 8 minutes to complete with the ride reaching speeds of 60kph. 1.7 million litres of water were used to fill the flume ride

and over 5000 bundles of straw and 500 trees were used to recreate the Irish landscape from 1000 years ago. Interlink began work on Viking Voyage by producing a

storyboard, along with a complete model of the themed ride – something that was crucial for Charles Coyle, general manager of Tayto Park, when deciding on a manufacturer to produce their brand new attraction. “We spoke to various flume ride manufacturers and settled on Interlink because they could provide a unique and exciting ride design for us, combining several special features together on one ride for the first time. They were also able to supply us a full storyboard, along with a complete hand sculptured scale model including the central mountain and the monastery. This gave the company theming the ride, and our landscape team, something realistic to work from for the final layout.” One thing Viking Voyage certainly does have is many special features. The ride includes 3 drops in total, the

produce Viking Voyage is what makes this ride one of a kind. The focal point of the ride is the man made mountain that sits 60ft high as the boats pass through it 3 times. Guests undertake an adventure from Scandinavian shores to the ring forts of Celtic Ireland, travelling through a monastery with a truly authentic round tower. Taking inspiration from Interlink’s design storyboard, Adrian Finnegan, design manager of The Deluxe Group, developed a breath-taking first scene for the ride that carries visitors through a waterfall rock cave framed by a towering Viking helmet. Faced with the challenge of working with heights of over 20 metres in a short time frame of just seven months for build completion, an innovative approach was needed to meet strict build deadlines. The Deluxe Group embarked upon developing innovative techniques and materials used recently in film set construction on titles such as Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them among others. A series of silicone moulds were taken from actual rock formations in Iceland and these were used to create a number of master moulds from which natural rock panels could be cast. Together with Tayto Park’s structural engineers Malone

O’Regan, a steel structure was designed that provided a modular frame to which lightweight panels could be attached. In order to ensure that true realism was achieved, The Deluxe Group project manager Colm Connolly called upon the services of film set art director Peter Black, whose credits include Game Of Thrones and Chronicles of Narnia. With a reputation for creating naturalistic landscapes, Peter Black directed the team of sculptors to shape the rockwork surface into a breath taking Nordic Fjord scene.

Guests climb 12 metres high before they face the largest drop Viking Voyage has to offer.

Ray Coyle, owner of Tayto Park, officially opened Viking Voyage on the 15th June.

Guests face the almighty splash of the flume ride which took 1.7 million litres of water to fill.
