We round up the runners and riders from this year’s iteration of the world’s greatest gambling expo
I’m delighted to say that ICE was certainly not a disaster, though it was also most defi nitely not the utter triumph it’s been heralded as in some parts. I’ve even seen it described as “the best ICE ever”, which is clearly utter bollocks. Big news for the event is the new underground line which will be up and running long before next year’s show, and which will make ExCeL far less of a pain in the arse to reach. Because fundamentally, it’s a superb venue, and London is a great city – the only really big issue is the headache of getting there, or being absolutely mullered by nearby hotels when a big event is on.
That said, it was shared with us shortly before the show by a prominent gaming CEO that their costs had trebled to attend a post-Brexit ICE. This was denied by Clarion – and has also been denied by Clarion to me, though I was not citing this individual in that conversation – as simply not true. But if you think that some of the major companies are spending €2m on the whole ICE exercise, and that that cost might treble… Well, let’s say I still believe ICE’s future lies outside Great Britain. And if it doesn’t because the organisers don’t accept the evidence of increased costs, it will disappear as we know it, and be replaced by an event that listens to the industry when they try and share knowledge. But what do I know, I can’t even hang on to my own hair.
