he size of our industry means that the voids that need fi lling are likely to always be greater than the talent pool available at any point in time. It’s even more noticeable with many operations based in the smaller jurisdictions such as Malta
and Gibraltar where the talent is not only limited but often recycled amongst the various organisations present there. The fundamental question however is how do we even get the gaming industry onto the radar of job seekers? In an educational setting for example, it would take a brave careers guide or counsellor to talk to young people, even in post-16 education, about a career in the gaming industry. The
industry is rarely invited to careers fairs and the terms AML, ECCD and MLRO are likely to be alien to anyone not already associated with the industry. We’re lucky in the UK that sport and gambling is such an ingrained part of our culture that we’re perhaps now being seen as a level above that of a career in adult entertainment, but we’re still often aligned with the likes of the tobacco and alcohol industries. Let’s not forget that it was only in 1960 that off-course bookmakers were legalised in the UK and the industry we know and love today began to take shape.
