Safer Gambling: whose responsibility is it anyway?
Safer gambling is, as always, a topic not far from the headlines when anything to do with betting, gaming or gambling is at the top of news agendas. David Richardson, Strategic Partnerships Manager at Better Change, explains

t is fair to say that the perception of gambling is usually one associated with negativity but let’s be clear, gambling is normal and has been a huge part of the culture in many countries for decades and will continue to be so for years to come.
Importantly, gambling is also a business which like others has the main aim to generate profit, and to do this people gambling must lose money. There is an argument to say that just as if someone
wanted to go and watch their football team and spend in excess of £100 over a few hours buying the ticket,
travelling to the match, buying some refreshments or even some club merchandise this is also lost money on something that someone enjoys doing for entertainment. We also can’t escape the fact that unlike some other forms of entertainment, like watching a football match live at the stadium, gambling can become addictive to some people where they risk losing more than they can afford on a regular basis. So, whose responsibility is this? Without getting into the finer detail and offending some people (or at least half!), no matter what opinions we have this responsibility must be a shared one.
