Excise Tax on Gaming Ads in Kenya Slammed by Media Owners
As Kenya mulls an tax on gaming ads, the Media Owners
Association of Kenya has urged the government to
reconsider the proposed taxation on gambling
advertisements outlined in the Finance bill for 2023.
The association’s chairperson, Agnes
Kalekye, argued that the provision, which includes a 15% increase in excise fees for advertising on various media platforms, should be eliminated. Kalekye warned that implementing the tax could result in job losses within the media industry and pose a threat to its economic viability. The opposition to the tax was supported by the Media Council of Kenya, which emphasized the need for responsible advertising practices in the gambling sector, without what it belives are punitive measure. Meanwhile, Kenya is also modernizing its
gambling regulations and enhancing revenue generation from the industry through proposed bills and a real-time monitoring system implemented by the Kenya Revenue Authority. Kenya’s gambling industry is undergoing a
comprehensive transformation as the government focuses on modernizing regulations and increasing revenue. The National Lottery Taskforce has published the draft Gambling Control Bill 2023 and National Lottery Bill 2023 to establish a framework for the industry. A draft gambling policy for Kenya in 2023 has also been released, outlining the government’s intentions. Additionally, the Kenya Revenue Authority has implemented a real-time monitoring system to integrate all license holders and improve tax collection within the sector. These initiatives demonstrate the government’s dedication to streamlining the gambling industry, enhancing regulatory oversight, and maximizing revenue generation for the country.
