90.94 percent of total waste stream diverted from landfills

facilities, but once we started talking about it, telling them about our crazy goal, everybody started listening and rallying for us. We have a lot of supporters, and now we have a new goal – get 95% of our waste recycled in the next five years. Instead of getting silver certification, we want gold!

CI: To do that you’re surely going to have to look at supply chain…

MF: Absolutely! That’s our next step. On the Zero Waste application, there are ten areas on the purchasing side. This particular go-round we didn’t get any credits there at all; next time we are going to focus a lot on that side, and once we get that onside I believe it will help the longevity of the program. We will have protocols installed, and this project will last long past our time here.

we are doing lately, how many pounds of plastic or food we have recycled, where you can buy our compost… It’s a good motivator and reminder for everyone in the casino that we are constantly striving for better.

CI: It sounds as though you have been well supported by the property as well though.

MF: Absolutely. The executive team has been on board, the tribal business community and the tribe as a whole has rallied around what we have been doing. Early on we didn’t really publicise what we were doing because it was just a function of

life for community members who are struggling with food insecurity by providing them with healthy, local produce and high quality prepared food

 The group picks up prepared food from the Chumash Casino Resort three times a week and delivers it to the Buellton Senior Center, which turns the food into hearty soups and meals

 In 2018, the Chumash Casino Resort donated more than four tons – 8,478 pounds – of prepared food to Veggie Rescue

“It’s been an absolute pleasure working with the Chumash. We’re fortunate to be the recipients of that excess food, which would otherwise go to the landfill, and be able to serve it to low-income seniors. I can’t underscore enough how truly positive it has been to partner with the Chumash.” -- Amy Derryberry, Executive Director of Veggie Rescue
