…we wanted to evoke the sense


of water, movement, to reflect the humour of the day…

I knew we needed to celebrate the Rocky Mountains, which you can see from all over the city, so we wanted to make something slightly more sculptural, but at the same time also to be not overtly extravagant, but more sensual. We play a lot with contrasts to create dialogue and movement in our projects, it is eye-catching. The outside facades are clad with copper sheets and glass, and inside we have a white fitted glass; on all of the junctions between the white and the copper you have a stainless steel frame which also reveals shape and curvature. Finally, on the façade we have put stainless steel fins on the copper which creates a pattern that we wanted to evoke the sense of water, movement, to reflect the humour of the day; if we have a beautiful sunset the building turns orange. If it’s raining, well, it’s raining, but the building still catches the light and stands out in the skyline. It’s subtle but it works very well.


This is one of the largest mixed-use projects in Canada, it’s a very large project.


CI: What has reaction been like for such a bold building? MF: I was worried about the reaction in the beginning because we took a direction that is different to what you might usually see in Vancouver, where most of the towers are
