MACAU BUSINESS Innovations


Innovation and technology lie at the core of this plan, which Beijing has dubbed a key to ‘the great renaissance of the Chinese nation’, with the term ‘innovation’ repeated 139 times, and popping up 76 times in the document. Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhou and Shenzhen


are regarded as core engines for the development of the 11 cities ‘to be driven by innovation and led by reform’ the outline notes.

It is of paramount importance now to build up a management and interest sharing mechanism [among the three places].” He suggests that nearby Hengqin Island – a part of Zhuhai regarded by the central government as a driver of Macau’s economic diversification – could further innovate its mechanisms of cargo, personnel and capital to become an experimental showcase of integration of systems between Guangdong and Macau.

The differences in the political and economic systems of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau have been pointed out by Mr. Si and observers across the political spectrum as the main hurdle for the development of the Greater Bay Area.
