Villagrán, highlighted “the contribution that this industry makes in a direct form to the communities where they are located, through the specific gaming tax generated, which is the only tax with of such nature in the Country.”

BRAZIL: First rendering of probable casino in Rio W

eb daily “Diário do Rio”, claims to have obtained exclusive rendering of an image for the first ideas for the new casino in Rio’s disused Port

Zone, next to a transatlantic terminal, which includes a convention centre, theatre, shops, marina, gardens and a hotel with casino. The article penned by the daily’s Executive Editor and Tourism Ambassador of Rio de Janeiro, Quintino Gomes Freire, adds: “Everything in a new area where the Rio Port Zone is vacant.” Diário do Rio has always been in favour of opening a

casino in Rio. Also supporting this idea are Rio Mayor, Marcelo Crivella, Rio Governor Wilson Witzel and Congress President Rodrigo Maia. So, it’s not surprising to see such a project because

studies on the subject show that casinos in integrated resorts with hotels could bring about the creation of between 250,000 to 300,000 jobs in the country, as well as generating tax resources of up to R$25 billion (US$6.5 billion) for local governments. However, what’s most

important to date is that the project would be one by US gaming tycoon Sheldon Adelson, owner of casinos in several countries the world over, including Las Vegas. He has shown a preference for the Rio port zone and would be ready to invest about US$2 billion in the project, creating up to 50,000 jobs in Rio.
