KITCHEN STORAGE
Daval identifies ‘Practical Luxe’ as the latest trend in kitchen storage
W
ith 2023 trends indicating a strong focus on a home-centred lifestyle in the face of continued economic uncertainty, creating the right balance of form and function has never been more important - especially as homeowners add value to their homes through well- considered furniture design.
We are already seeing an emphasis on ‘practical luxe’ with designated larders and pantries as consumers stock up on essential groceries. The
market will continue to demand thoughtful solutions which will maximise every inch of space with custom boot rooms and utility rooms set to become popular additions to the main kitchen area, so that bulk purchases and non-perishable items can be stored away discreetly. As the holistic home continues to evolve in
2023, we predict steady growth in kitchens with integrated home office space as more and more consumers seek to carve out space for work, studies and hobbies at home. This means that
having a second smaller kitchen is set to become the norm for snacks and refreshments throughout the day, separate from the main kitchen, so designers will be able to make different kitchens within the same household even more personalised to the end user.
We will look back on 2020-22 as a sea change in the UK furniture market as premium manufacturers fully embrace the importance of whole-house interior design and the possibilities of bespoke storage in the kitchen and utility room.

Duncans and Häfele UK maximise compact kitchen D
uncans of Grantown has shown small spaces can be big on functionality after transforming a six metre square kitchen in the Scottish Highlands. Working with Häfele UK, designer Holly Spittal helped her client to maximise every millimetre with usable storage.
Alongside an integrated microwave, washer/dryer, fridge freezer and slimline dishwasher, Holly created space for 900mm and
1000mm corner cabinets, complete with Vauth- Sagel Cornerstone Maxx pull-out shelving. With a 25kg per shelf capacity, Cornerstone Maxx is the ideal solution for kitchens short on space. Either side of the corner units, 150mm cabinets with two-tier pull-out storage were added providing room for ingredients that previously took up precious workspace in the kitchen. Holly’s also recommended Häfele’s hingeless flap fitting, Free space 1.11, for the design’s wall units and the Hailo Uno built-in waste bin from Häfele

due to its shallow depth that allows space at the back of the cabinet for waste pipes. As a testament to Holly’s clever use of space, the project was awarded Best Functional Space Design at Häfele’s 2022 annual studio partner awards.
