The David Caulfield Outstanding Contribution Award - Mark Mills
What does winning this award mean to you?
I was not fortunate enough to have met David but reading about him and his character, achievements and ethics I feel truly privileged to be connected to him in this way, and honoured to have been given this Award. To quote David “We all know work can bring many challenges but also many new opportunities. To accomplish great things, you must not only act, but you must dream, you must plan and most importantly you must also believe.” What a principle to live and work by. Those that know me well may refer to me as an optimist, I believe it is so important to be positive - in a realistic yet aspirational way, and I take the description as a great compliment, as I think David would. Optimism gives us energy, drive and belief. Thank you for honouring me with this Award which inspires me to move forward with vision and ambition but never losing sight of the belief we must have in ourselves and those around us.
How did your career begin in this industry?
I started my career with Mereway back in 1995. My first job was sanding doors at our satellite factory in Birmingham, which led to my promotion to Production Coordinator. I became heavily
involved in overhauling the throughput of the factory and exploring new technologies. That curiosity resulted in me joining Easy Quote Software where I worked with numerous brands to help them utilise technology to improve their management processes. I re-joined Mereway in the mid-2000s in the role of sales and customer services before heading out to get first-hand experience with our retailers.
What would you say has been your key to success?
I have been involved in so many areas of the Mereway business, from Production, to CAD design, Operations, Customer Service, Sales, Key Accounts Management, National Account Management and Marketing before being promoted to Managing Director back in 2020. I believe my knowledge of the Mereway business, from grass roots to senior management has

given me an invaluable insight into the very essence of the company. I have a very relevant understanding of how every department works. I love the industry and this business and I believe that genuine affinity marks every decision and action I make. I also think it’s really important to continually adapt. This isn’t a static industry, there are constantly evolving customer needs, software tools etc.
What has been one of your greatest achievements? There have been so many career highlights during the last 27 years and being honoured with this award is definitely one of them, but I have to say being appointed as Managing Director of Mereway Kitchens, was without question the greatest achievement in my career, and I was thrilled to accept the role. Being MD has given me many challenges but also great rewards and I wouldn’t change a thing.
