promise will be the hottest on record. Britain being Britain, by the time you read this, the country may have already had a deluge. This is at the heart of the water scarcity challenge. Climate change is producing more extreme weather patterns, making it more challenging to manage water resources. A few places in Southeast England lost their water supply during the most recent heatwave. Still, the Environment Agency cautions this could become a widespread and regular occurrence if we don’t do something about water supply and demand. supply infrastructure through water transfer facilities, reservoirs, and desalination is undoubtedly required. However, these are expensive interventions that will need to be paid for by the taxpayer or through water bills. It’s an unsavoury prospect during a cost-of-living crunch. Therefore, the water industry and government are looking at how the built environment can contribute to lowering demands on our limited water resources. New homes already need to meet a high standard of water efficiency.
Houses must have fittings installed that enable a typical person to use only 110 litres of water per person per day to comply with building regulations in some water-stressed areas. Some house builders, incentivised by water companies and local authorities, are going even further. As well as building properties to an ultra-efficient specification, they’re making other interventions to make developments water neutral. With 27 million existing homes versus only 200,000 new homes each
year, retrofitting for water efficiency has the most significant potential to reduce overall demand (other than major behaviour change). The Unified Water Label provides the product information to help consumers and specifiers make water-efficient choices. Retrofitting for energy efficiency has been prominent for some time; calls to retrofit for water efficiency will grow, and this presents an opportunity for all involved in the KBB industry. We must prepare by innovating new products, talking up water efficiency and fighting the inertia that prevents new water technologies from being adopted.
