This is an important distinction, as product literature naturally focuses on performance claims, whereas independent certifi cation provides the technical context that allows specifi ers to assess whether those claims are appropriate for a particular application. Another important element to consider is the storage, handling and installation of the products once specifi ed. This is crucial, as the real-world performance on site depends on the materials being managed in accordance with the conditions under which they were assessed. This is also refl ected within the BBA certifi cation, which includes installation guidance alongside technical performance information. For PIR insulation, this means ensuring boards are closely butted together to minimise thermal bridging, protecting exposed insulation from adverse weather during construction and avoiding the use of damaged boards.
Installers should also be aware that foil- faced boards can become slippery in wet conditions and should always follow appropriate health and safety procedures when cutting or handling insulation. Storage plays an equally important role.
Boards should be kept dry, stored fl at and raised above ground level to prevent moisture uptake. Wherever practical they should be stored indoors, while externally stored materials should remain protected beneath suitable opaque waterproof coverings. Only the quantity required for immediate installation should be removed from storage, reducing unnecessary exposure to weather conditions, and any boards that have deteriorated should not be incorporated into the building envelope. These practical considerations help ensure that the product installed on site continues to deliver the same performance characteristics that informed the original specifi cation. Independent certifi cation has an important role to play by providing specifi ers with a comprehensive source of verifi ed product information that extends beyond headline performance fi gures. For PIR insulation, BBA certifi cation should therefore be regarded as an integral part of the specifi cation toolkit rather than a marketing badge.
