In today’s construction industry, which has seen signifi cant changes in the way construction materials are evaluated and certifi ed, specifi cation has become an increasingly evidence-led discipline. When selecting insulation materials, it’s not enough to simply consider the thermal performance. Building designers must also balance fi re safety, moisture management, durability, buildability and regulatory compliance, while maintaining a clear record of the decisions that underpin a project. As expectations around product
information continue to evolve, independently verifi ed technical evidence has become more valuable than ever. The British Board of Agrément (BBA) has long been recognised as one of the construction industry’s most respected
independent certifi cation bodies, yet its certifi cates are still sometimes viewed as simply another product credential. However, they are far more useful than that. Behind that certifi cation lies a substantial body of independent testing and ongoing verifi cation, which has a direct bearing on how a specifi er can defend their decisions if a product’s performance is ever questioned. For architects and specifi ers, a BBA certifi cate should be treated as a useful technical design resource that helps inform specifi cation decisions, supports compliance and provides independently assessed evidence of a product’s suitability for its intended application. After all, obtaining BBA certifi cation is a
rigorous process that extends well beyond laboratory testing. Products are subjected
to detailed technical assessment, while manufacturing processes and quality control procedures are also scrutinised to ensure consistency throughout production. For PIR insulation, certifi cation
typically evaluates a range of performance characteristics including thermal conductivity, moisture resistance, water vapour permeability, dimensional stability and reaction to fi re. The assessment also considers how the product performs in its intended applications and the conditions under which that performance can be achieved. The resulting certifi cate provides
considerably more than a summary of test results. It explains where the product can be used, identifi es any limitations, references the standards
