Products not up to standard


I read W. Wiltshire’s letter in the November issue and I have to concur with his comments. I personally refused to work on new build sites for exactly the same reasons. As for the quality of some boilers, and especially plumbing items, I lost all hope expecting these to be made to a good standard. Only the other day I bought a ball valve that was so badly made with play in the arm assembly that it only just worked.


Whenever I have to turn off a water


supply to carry out a repair I always look outside the property for the water meter valve, or put a rubber bung in the cold water storage tank, as I do not trust the internal stop cocks or gate valves not to give me another problem.


I am also not a Luddite and accept


that boilers are now more effi cient, but the lifetime cost of these appliances is questionable and is a poor refl ection on our industry.

Registration will protect the public


I write in reply to George Robinson’s letter in the November issue. Mr Robinson has misconstrued the object of mandatory registration. As a professional plumber and heating engineer, I for one do not encourage bureaucrats or tick-boxing civil servants. Small businesses have enough to do without yet more paperwork.


The object is to curtail and discourage


the cowboy/rogue trader. The reason why professional installers need to be properly registered is to safeguard the unsuspecting public from bad workmanship, and having to pay twice for the same job.


Five years ago, I became an engineer for


a newly established boiler company. I was requested to go to a job where the boiler was ‘cutting out’. I discovered that the pipework was once again 15mm and not 22mm, while the fl ow rate in the bathroom was 10 litres a minute instead of 20 litres a minute, so when the customer was having a shower, he had to keep getting out to re-set the boiler.


This would not have happened if the job had been done properly in the fi rst place.
