PHAM NEWS | APRIL 2025 Training Update 17

CPD covers heat pump specification and design

Commercial heating and hot water specialist Hamworthy Heating has expanded its CIBSE-accredited Continuous Professional Development (CPD) portfolio with the launch of ‘Considerations for air source heat pump selection, specification and system design’. Aimed at anyone involved in

plant room design, the CPD is divided into four easy-to-digest segments and provides valuable information on selecting and sizing air source heat pumps for both new and existing commercial buildings. Beginning with an introduction to the main driving forces behind

air source heat pumps, the course discusses the various influencing factors to consider when specifying a heat pump. Participants can learn more about the process of sizing air source heat pumps according to their design, load and intended use.

Participants will also learn

about issues such as space and noise, and positioning and mounting issues. Delivered in person or online,

Hamworthy’s new CPD seminar lasts approximately one hour. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/425/20

Online product training comes in bite-sizes

New to Impey’s ‘bite-sized’ training concept is a ‘Product Spotlight’ mini-series aimed at installers, plumbers, architects and showroom staff. The monthly 30-minute online sessions cover topics such as wetroom installation and waterproofing. Attendees joining online will gain valuable product insights, installation guidance, and the opportunity to ask questions, all within a convenient, condensed format. Upcoming events include: Friday, 11th April - Linear

Wetroom Design and Installation; Friday, 2nd May - Waterproofing a Wetroom; and Friday, 6th June - Wetroom Drainage Options. All sessions are free to attend, but spaces are limited. Use the link below to reserve your place. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/425/21

Partnership expands green skills in East Anglia

Looking to inspire the next generation of installers, Stiebel Eltron UK has expanded the training centre at its Wirral headquarters to double its capacity. The expansion has transformed a 20,000ft2

unit, which

it acquired last year, into a new training facility which will allow the company to accommodate up to 32 installers at any given time, giving them the opportunity to benefit from hands-on experience with the latest heat pump and ventilation technologies. As part of the development, a dedicated room for Mechanical Ventilation

with Heat Recovery (MVHR) has been created, providing trainees with practical insights into energy-efficient ventilation solutions. The new training suite will also enable trainees to get to grips with a

range of ground and air source heat pumps which vary in size and shape and are used in different situations, such as in commercial settings, houses or flats. As well as offering in-person courses, the company provides online training for newcomers to the renewable heating sector, as well as courses for more experienced professionals. Recently-appointed training manager Shaun Walsh comments: “With

the demand for renewable heating growing rapidly, this training centre will play a vital role in upskilling professionals and supporting the industry’s transition to a more sustainable future.” ◼ phamnews.co.uk/425/22

Waste water heat recovery systems

A new CPD from Showersave explores the role of waste water heat recovery systems (WWHRS) in reducing energy consumption and achieving regulatory compliance. The free online webinar series, ‘Introduction to

Waste Water Heat Recovery’, is now open for registration, with sessions in June and September. The webinars cover how WWHRS contributes to meeting the energy efficiency requirements set by the Future Homes Standard (FHS) and offers a cost effective route to Part L compliance. Designed for architects, specifiers, housebuilders

(l-r) Olivia Downing (NIBE), Emma Taylor (Suffolk New College), Paul Smith (NIBE MD) and Chris Easton (NIBE)

Suffolk New College is celebrating the second anniversary of its Net Zero Skills Centre via a partnership with NIBE Energy Systems to enhance green skills training, positioning itself as the lead training centre in the South of England for renewable energy solutions. The partnership means the

£1.5m centre will be able to upscale training in renewable energy solutions for people of all ages in East Anglia and beyond. The centre was opened in 2023

and since then the facility has helped hundreds of construction,

engineering and building technology students gain skills that will help them become more sustainable in their future careers. In March 2025, the centre

launched phase two of its development. As part of this expansion, NIBE has signed up to become a key industry training partner. NIBE has committed to giving apprentices, staff and students specialist training days via equipment that has been donated to the college. The first training sessions begin later this year. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/425/24

Apprenticeship in district heating

The UK’s first Heat Network Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship has been approved by IfATE and is ready to be delivered nationwide, with South & City College Birmingham (SCCB) set to welcome the first intake of apprentices in April 2025. It will provide the opportunity for a generation of young people to work in the district heating sector, equipping them with essential skills to meet the industry’s growing demands and creating a wave of new green jobs. This three-year, NVQ-equivalent apprenticeship was

developed by an industry-led Trailblazer Group, chaired by Toby Powell, operations director at Hemiko, a heat network investor and operator. Hemiko formed the group with the aim of attracting fresh talent into the rapidly growing heat network industry, enhancing the knowledge and skill base of those maintaining heat networks across the UK, and expanding opportunities

for people to enter the sector. The qualification, which has been endorsed by IMechE, will be open to people over the age of 16 with no prior industry experience, as well as workers wanting to retrain and join the heat network industry. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/425/25

and developers, the CPD is presented by Cameron Loggenberg, technical manager at Showersave. Attendees will gain valuable insights into WWHRS technology, including its role in improving EPC ratings, supporting SAP calculations and enhancing overall energy efficiency and cost savings. Showersave’s ‘Introduction to Waste Water Heat

Recovery’ CPD webinar will take place on Wednesday 4th June and 3rd September, from 12:30 to 13:15. To register for free, visit www.showersave.com/ resources/webinars or use the reader link below. ◼ phamnews.co.uk/425/23
