he cost of attending university in the UK has risen in 2024 due to increased living expenses and inflation, heavily
impacting students. Save the Student reports that average student living costs have risen by around 10%, with specific regions seeing significant increases, such as a 30% rise in the West Midlands. Despite these rising costs, student loans only increased by around 2.3% during the 2022/23 academic year, creating a significant gap between financial aid and actual living expenses. On average, maintenance loans cover less than half of students’ living costs, leading many to take on
additional debt or rely on credit cards to make ends meet. From phones and laptops to groceries and
kitchenware, the list of term-time essentials for university students is lengthy and invariably expensive. Research conducted by eBay shows that the average student predicts they’ll be spending an extra £411.58 compared to previous years, and 85% are worried about how they are going to afford their first term. eBay can help students save by encouraging
them to consider refurbished technology and discounted homeware essentials as they prepare for the year.
