We chat with Tern’s Team Captain, Josh Hon, about getting more people out of cars and onto bikes.


How do you view the ongoing evolution of the consumer mindset when it comes to replacing a second family car with an e-bike? I think we’re making really great progress in many cities around the world. The cost of owning and operating a car has really skyrocketed in the last few years. It’s at about GBP 7,000/year in the UK, and that doesn’t even include parking and tolls. In many major cities, half of all trips are within 3 miles; well, at that distance, a bike is almost guaranteed to be faster. We’re really just trying to educate consumers, letting them know they can save money, save time, get a bit of

exercise, and have a bit more fun switching from a car to a bike for short trips. But as much progress as we’ve made, there are many more people out there still to reach!


Tern has a vocal stance on creating bikes that are “serviceable rather than landfillable”. How does a brand balance the drive for new product sales with the ethical need for hardware longevity? Personally, I find great satisfaction in creating highly functional things that stand the test of time. Nobody at Tern has ever said, “Hey, if we make this really long-lasting, we
