FIE REVIEW

Making health claims an affordable option

KBP Editor, Kiran Grewal, sits down with Gitte Vaes, Product Manager for Functional Fibres at BENEO for an interview on-stand at Fi Europe in Frankfurt, Germany

Thank you for inviting me onto your stand! Could you begin with a brief introduction? “So, first of all, I’m Gitte, Product Manager for functional fibres within BENEO. Historically functional fibres for BENEO have been inulin and oligofructose (FOS) from chicory root, they are well known as sugar replacers, for fibre enrichment, and nowadays very interesting for its improvement of Nutri-Score opportunities, as well as the prebiotic claims.” “But I’m glad to tell you that we recently launched new ingredients, called Orafti® β-Fit. This

βis actually the first time that we are

showing it at a European fair and it’s also the first time that a product is produced in the US. So, it’s many firsts for BENEO,” says Gitte. “What is particularly intriguing is that it’s

barley flour containing 20% beta-glucans. Additionally, it already holds pre-approved health claims in Europe by EFSA, attesting to its ability to reduce the glycaemic response and lower cholesterol levels. There is noticeable interest in heart-healthy products, and while beta-glucans have been present in the market for some time, their historically high cost has been a limiting factor. Now, we have successfully made these products more affordable for both consumers and food companies,” she adds.

What research has been done to tell you that consumers are more interested in heart health? Gitte explains: “I believe it certainly aligns with the global trend post-COVID, wherein people are seeking a more long-term approach to health, with a preference for enhancing well-being through dietary means rather than pharmaceutical interventions—a more proactive approach.
