Electric vehicles and the fight against climate change


There was a time when every car on the road contributed to climate change through its exhaust. However, with the spread of electric vehicles, the tide has changed, and drivers can operate their cars without the guilty conscience of damaging the environment.

n this article, we look at how electric vehicles are helping in combating environmental pollution globally. First, we consider how severe the contribution of transportation has been to climate change.


Do fossil-fueled vehicles contribute to climate change? While many people who own internal combustion engine vehicles may want to believe otherwise, the answer is yes. The carbon emissions produced as a by-product of fossil fuel combustion contribute to the greenhouse effect.


According to data on the US Environmental Protection Agency website, the transportation sector was responsible for 29 percent of greenhouse gases in 2019. Light-duty vehicles accounted for 58 percent of that share, while medium and heavy-duty trucks contributed 24 percent.


This is why governments worldwide are trying to get ICE vehicles off the road, like the UK, which will ban the sale of new ICE light-duty vehicles in 2030 and hybrids in 2035. We will now examine how electric vehicles help fight against climate change.


Zero-carbon emission during operation


Electric vehicles do not produce carbon emissions during their operation. They do not even have exhaust pipes, as they have a battery and an electric motor in the place of an internal combustion engine and a gas tank. Even hybrids, which combine an internal combustion engine and an electric motor, have been known to produce less pollution than purely ICE vehicles. This makes cities greener as the air is cleaner for the residents to breathe.


Electric vehicles eliminate other sources of pollution


For internal combustion engine vehicles to work, they need an infrastructure for supplying fuel. While the infrastructure grew gradually, they have become


a significant source of pollution. For example, numerous trucks are required to supply fuel to the filling stations from which other vehicles fill their tanks. These trucks are a source of pollution, but with electric cars, the need for operating these fuel trucks will reduce.


Electric vehicles can be charged with cleaner sources of electricity Some skeptics claim electric vehicles are charged with electricity from generating stations that produce carbon emissions. However, this view does consider that the share of clean electricity in the total output is on the rise in many countries, with wind and solar sources getting more investments. Some utility companies even offer plans that ensure the customer only uses clean energy. Electric vehicle owners can also install solar panels in their homes, reducing their carbon footprint. For electric vehicles to be practical, it is crucial to build an enabling infrastructure. An important EVSE is


the EV charger, which allows electric vehicle owners to connect their cars to charge the battery. A good EV charger needs a display to the car owner to monitor the charging session.
