Southern Manufacturing & Electronics returns to Farnborough
Southern Manufacturing & Electronics, the UK’s largest and longest running electronics show, will make a welcome return to Farnborough from February 8th to 10th 2022

ews of the show’s revival was greeted with a groundswell of support from a large number of its long-standing exhibitors, allowing it to swiftly recover to close to pre- Covid occupancy levels. High-tech production hardware and automation, components, electronics production, business and subcontract services will all be part in the
event, which draws together organisations from all over the UK, continental Europe and beyond.
At the time of writing, only a few stands remain unoccupied and the organisers expect the 20,000m² Farnborough International Exhibition Centre to be fully booked by the time the show opens. Optimism also remains high that visitor numbers will likewise bounce back to 2020’s record-breaking attendance of roughly 9,000 visitors. Southern’s strongest feature is its huge variety of participants, making it among the best exhibitions in the UK to locate products or specialised engineering expertise, both domestically and globally. At a time when travel is so difficult, it’s an excellent opportunity to deal with multiple procurement challenges in a single visit.
As in previous years, the show is split roughly equally between manufacturing and electronics. In the latter, the visitor will encounter many familiar names across many different aspects of the electronics industry, from production hardware to components and subcontract services.
Production and inspection hardware exhibitors include Mycronic, showing its flexible PCB manufacturing solutions designed to reduce operational costs and improve yield. Hardware on show includes the MY300 compact placing machine, MY700 stenciless solder paste jet printing, K series 3D AOI system and the MYTower flexible storage units. Alongside its regular exhibits, this year Blundell Production Equipment is introducing the i-Pulse Yamaha M20 auto-placement machines, with specialists on hand to guide visitors through set-up and operation. Component vendors attending this year include many of the biggest names in the UK and continental Europe. Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) employs nearly 1,100 people in 11 countries, supplying over half a million product lines from more than 1,200 leading manufacturers. The product portfolio covers semiconductors, IoT hardware, optoelectronics, passive and electromechanical components, connectors and much more. A fellow exhibitor, Würth Electronics is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of EMC solutions, inductors, transformers and connectors. Easby Electronics is one of the UK’s top supplies of electronic components, offering a vast range of products including custom batteries, power supplies, semiconductors, displays, electromechanical, passive components, optoelectronics, IoT devices and EV charging hardware.
The show is also a great place to find more specific or specialist components such as power supplies, displays, speciality connectors and sensors. TDK- Lambda UK is highlighting two of its latest power supply lines; the UK-designed CUS400M which features multiple cooling options and the latest additions to its popular Genesys+ programmable power supplies. ESI Technology will showcase
its GS4400 pressure transmitter with RS-485 interface. The range also includes a high pressure and sub-sea variants. Also on show is its H series of pressure transmitters and transducers for use in hydrogen applications. New products on show on the Midas Displays’ stand will include smart TFT displays with CAN bus interface, and RGB LCDs. Subcontract services are also a major feature of the event, with representatives
from every electronics production discipline present, from design and contract assembly to PCB production and inspection. Electronics design and software development consultancy Ignys will be offering specialist advice on designing- around the global chip shortage. Esprit Electronics will highlight its range of services, such as PCB assembly, NPI, DFT/DFM, test and inspection, conformal coating or box build. PCB specialists returning for 2022 include European Circuits and Shenzhen X-Mulong. Together with the trade show and demonstration spaces, the free seminar programme will return for 2022 in a socially-distanced arrangement. Subjects tackled encompass energy reduction, new technology, innovation, supply chain and business strategy, together with a closer look at current industrial law and post Brexit laws and regulations. Naturally, health and safety is a priority for both visitors and participants. Farnborough International Exhibition Centre is among Europe’s newest trade show venues. Its ventilation system provides filtered fresh air throughout the main hall. This, combined with its non-urban location and convenient access by private transport, make it a relatively low-risk environment. There’s free onsite car parking for 3,500 vehicles, plus a dedicated free bus service between Farnborough’s train stations directly to the show. The venue itself provides a high standard of facilities including a free WiFi service along with high quality catering outlets.
