CYBERSECURITY

New rules, new risks: Why cybersecurity is a must-have in global gaming

How BMM Testlabs’ ‘BIG Cyber’ can guide gaming companies through new regulations and fast-growing cyber dangers.

T

he gaming industry is growing fast, and so are the cyber threats that come with it. Today, both online gaming platforms and land-based casinos use complicated systems, large amounts of data, and many connected devices. This makes the industry a major target for hackers. Cybersecurity is no longer something ‘nice to have.’ It is something every gaming company needs.

BIG CHALLENGES

BIG Cyber was created in 2019 by Martin Storm, who has also led BMM Testlabs for more than 23 years. As the chief executive officer of BMM Testlabs, an independent global gaming test lab focused on protecting the industry and all who play through best-in-class product compliance testing and certification, Storm saw early on that the gaming industry would face big challenges as technology advanced.

Online gaming collects huge amounts of personal and financial information, and criminals know this. Storm recognised that with so much money and data on the line, even a short system outage or a small security weakness can cause major problems.

Today, those risks are even bigger. As 2025 comes to a close, many countries, especially in Europe, are creating stricter cybersecurity laws. These rules are designed to protect businesses

and players, and they require gaming companies to take more responsibility for their security systems. In other words, companies can’t ignore cybersecurity anymore.

Marzia Turrini, BMM Testlabs’ President of iGaming & Cybersecurity, explains it clearly: “The gaming sector is facing a perfect storm of digital growth, stricter regulatory standards, and more aggressive cyberattacks. Operators have never had more to lose. This isn’t just an IT problem anymore; it’s a business problem that leaders, from the C-Suite to the Board of Directors, must take seriously.”

NEW LEGISLATION

In Europe, several laws are changing the expectations for gaming companies. The NIS2 Directive requires organisations to follow strict cybersecurity practices and report incidents quickly. The Cyber Resilience Act requires digital products, such as software and connected devices, to meet new security standards. The EU Cybersecurity Act may also require official certification for services like managed detection and response (MDR), penetration testing, and security audits. These laws make it clear that companies must strengthen their defenses or face fines, reputational damage, and even action by regulators.

BMM Testlabs’ BIG Cyber helps gaming

companies stay ahead of these challenges. BIG Cyber offers penetration testing, vulnerability assessments, and PCI:DSS evaluations, which are all important ways to test and strengthen security. The Company also provides managed cybersecurity services, including CYREBRO’s state-level MDR (Google Cloud Partner), employee security training through KnowBe4, and cyber-risk measurement tools from Maxxsure. “What makes BIG Cyber different is that we truly understand regulated gaming,” Turrini says. “We work with casinos, online platforms, sportsbooks, lotteries, and regulators all over the world. We don’t just secure systems; we protect the whole gaming environment. Protection is why we exist.” Turrini also warns that waiting too long to act is dangerous. “Cybersecurity is not a cost; it is the foundation of your brand’s integrity,” she says. “Companies that invest in cybersecurity now will protect their players, their employees, and their reputation. Those who don’t are taking risks they simply can’t afford.”

SERIOUS THREAT

As cyber threats grow and regulations tighten, gaming companies must treat cybersecurity as seriously as compliance and responsible gaming. The industry depends on trust. BIG Cyber is prepared to help companies stay protected, stay compliant, and stay one step ahead of the attackers.
