Appliances Direct founder hits back at £1.2m CMA fine, ‘we have no idea how the CMA calculated our fine’
However, responding to the decision in a lengthy LinkedIn post, Mr Glynne questioned both the size of the penalty and the way the investigation was conducted. He claimed the business had faced the threat
Nick Glynne, Founder of Buy It Direct Group, has criticised the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) following its £1.2 million fine against Appliances Direct, questioning whether the penalty is proportionate and accusing the regulator of pressuring the business into accepting a settlement. As previously reported by ERT, Appliances Direct was among several businesses investigated by the CMA over potentially misleading online sales practices, including time-limited promotions and automatically adding optional services to customers’ orders. The regulator has now fined the retailer £1.2 million to refund approximately £432,000
and ordered it
to affected customers after finding breaches of consumer protection law.
of a fine of up to £65 million under the CMA’s new enforcement powers, which allow penalties of up to 10 per cent of global turnover for breaches of consumer protection law. “We have no idea how the CMA calculated our fine,” he said.
Mr Glynne also claimed the company had been
offered an £800,000 reduction if it accepted the settlement terms and agreed not to appeal, despite receiving legal advice that it had grounds to challenge both the penalty and customer refunds. He said the estimated £500,000 cost
of
contesting the decision, combined with losing the settlement discount, had ultimately influenced the company’s decision. “In other words, the CMA did exactly what it accused us of: pressuring us to accept its time- limited offer,” he said.
Sirius Buying Group raises £13,500 for cancer charity
Sirius Buying Group has raised £13,500 for its 2026 charity partner, OCHRE, following a charity auction held during the Gala Dinner at its 25th Anniversary Trade Show in September.
The charity auction, a regular feature of the
Group’s annual Gala Dinner, saw approved suppliers donate a range of products and experiences, with members bidding throughout the evening to raise funds for OCHRE, the Oesophageal Cancer Charity. This year’s fundraising has particular significance
for Sirius following the diagnosis of long-standing member John Wardman, of Domestic Supplies in Mansfield, with early-stage oesophageal cancer arising from Barrett’s oesophagus. After experiencing symptoms, Mr Wardman sought medical advice rather than continuing to rely on over-the-counter medication, leading to an early diagnosis., and his experience highlights the importance of recognising potential symptoms and seeking medical attention, which is central to OCHRE’s awareness campaigns. Mark Veysey, Operations Director at Sirius Buying Group offered his thanks to everyone who donated, everyone who bid, and everyone who has given since. Fundraising for OCHRE will continue throughout
the remainder of 2026, with members, suppliers and supporters encouraged to contribute through the Group’s dedicated JustGiving page. Further information about the charity can be found at
ochrecharity.org.uk.
