A little less conversation, a little more automation
As consumers look for smarter, more efficient homes, connected appliances are moving firmly into the mainstream. ERT discovers more.

onnected appliances are no longer a futuristic concept reserved for early adopters, they are rapidly becoming a core consideration for mainstream appliance shoppers. As households look to balance convenience, efficiency and sustainability, Wi-Fi enabled major domestic appliances (MDAs) are carving out a more defined role on the retail floor. Connectivity is also influencing purchasing behaviour across categories. In cooking, guided recipe platforms and automated extraction systems are helping to remove guesswork and improve results. In laundry, intelligent sensors, auto-dosing systems and usage dashboards provide reassurance and efficiency. In refrigeration, internal cameras and inventory-linked recipe suggestions aim to reduce food waste. Dishwashers, meanwhile, are leveraging automatic detergent dispensing and remote monitoring to improve convenience and consistency. Crucially, the narrative around connected appliances has matured. Rather than being sold purely as ‘smart’, they are increasingly positioned as practical tools that save time,
reduce waste and provide peace of mind. For retailers, the challenge is to translate technical capability into relatable in-store conversations, focusing on lifestyle benefits, long-term value and sustainability credentials. For electrical retailers, this presents both an opportunity and a responsibility. Michael Forbes, Lead Product Trainer at
Electrolux Group, explains that connectivity is now embedded across the AEG portfolio, spanning both its taste and care categories. “At AEG, we offer a wide range of connected appliances across our taste and care product categories. Our AEG app allows users to monitor and control their appliances through

remote control, real-time monitoring and automation, enabling them to manage tasks from anywhere,” he says.
Among the most notable innovations is the 7000 MealAssist Oven with AI TasteAssist, designed to reflect how consumers now discover recipes online. “With more people turning to digital platforms for cooking inspiration, AI TasteAssist bridges the gap between online content and real-world cooking results. By pasting a recipe URL into the AEG app, the technology scans the page, extracts the cooking instructions and analyses the desired outcomes. It then makes tailored suggestions based on the specific capabilities of the user’s AEG oven, optimising function, temperature, cooking time and preheat settings to help deliver the best possible results.” Mr Forbes highlights that connectivity also enhances the user interface. “Our 8000 MealAssist with SteamPro Oven features the award-winning CookSmart Touch display. With intuitive swipe navigation, it makes selecting functions simple while offering helpful cooking tips, step-by-step guidance and eco advice, such as using steam to cook more efficiently.”
