“If products are displayed well and made easy to find in a pleasant environment, customers are likely to buy more”

Founded in 1874

It’s great to be back! I

undertook some garden projects over the summer, which meant taking a few trips to some of my local DIY stores. Where I shop tends to depend on what kind of materials I’m after. For the garden, when I might want some wood, paving and cement, I’ll normally go to the builder’s merchant, where I’m prepared to pull on my boots and gloves and get down and dirty. But when it comes to jobs indoors, when materials are more likely to be used for decorating, I tend to go to the local DIY shed.

This was the case a couple of weeks ago when I needed some paint and brushes, so popped into my local branch of B&Q. I haven’t been in for while and I was pleasantly surprised by how clean, neat and tidy it was. No need for boots and gloves, this was almost a ‘luxury’ shopping experience. Everything was well arranged and easy to find, so it was a pleasure to cruise the aisles and inevitably I came out with more goods than I originally intended to buy. Not only that, but the cashier was very happy to inform me that the store would be upgrading to a long overdue contactless payment system that very week. This experience proved to me that DIY retailers are having to move with the times and make shopping easier and more pleasurable in order to entice customers in and then maximise sales opportunities. And I’m proof, if it were needed, that if products are displayed well and made easy to find in a pleasant environment, customers are likely to buy more of them. Which is why I’m very much looking forward to taking care of DIY Week magazine, while the Editor, Fiona Garcia, is on maternity leave for the next year, and bring you the latest news and fresh ideas on how to make this work for you. This isn’t my first foray into the DIY market, I spent 10 years of my publishing career editing magazines in the woodworking and home improvement sector and I also edited Garden Centre Update for a couple of years. It’s great for me to see how the market has evolved and learn more about the latest products, trends and technology which are helping to move it forward and I look forward to sharing this knowledge with you via the pages of DIY Week.
