TIMBER
SILENCE IS GOLDEN
Urbanisation is increasing and will continue to do so, and consumers need a sound proofing solution to better their garden experience. BMJ investigates acoustic fencing.
A
s urbanisation increases, so does the issue of noise pollution. With more homes, schools, and businesses situated near busy roads, railways, and industrial areas, the demand for effective soundproofing solutions has grown significantly.
Acoustic fencing has emerged as a practical response to this challenge, providing a physical barrier that helps reduce unwanted noise in both residential and commercial settings.
Dave Say, UK softwood products commercial manager at Premier Forest Products, says: “Made from responsibly sourced certified timber, these barriers are the ideal solution in a wide range of scenarios ranging from houses near railway lines, to schools hoping to minimise their impact on the local community.
“Naturally, our solutions meet the specifications required for acoustic barriers, but we very much listened to our customers when developing the range, which offers a choice of sizes for versatility when it comes to installation. It is our hope that these barriers will become the go-to solution for those looking to prioritise noise reduction.” He explains that the UK market for acoustic barriers is expanding, driven by increasing awareness of the health impacts of noise and the need to meet stricter regulatory standards. The acoustic fence panels are manufactured in the UK and have been tested to achieve a noise reduction of 26 decibels (dB). This makes them suitable for various environments

where noise control is a priority, from residential back gardens to commercial premises and public sector projects. The panels are designed to reflect sound, reducing the impact of noise pollution from nearby roads, railways, and industrial zones. Made from horizontal tongue and groove ‘V’ joint boards, the panels are made from joinery-grade Scandinavian redwood. The boards are interlocked and bonded with an acoustic sealant, which enhances their ability to block and dampen sound.
Upgrade options
There are two types of Premier Forest Products acoustic panels. The Duchy Acoustic Fence is 1.8 x 1.8m metres and is designed for homeowners seeking to upgrade and replace their existing fence in order to reduce noise in their outdoor spaces. This product is particularly relevant for those living near busy roads or railways, where constant noise can be a significant disturbance. For larger-scale projects, the Premier Reflect Acoustic Barrier offers flexibility in installation, with wider 2.4m panels available in one metre, two metre and three metre heights that can be stacked up to a height of five metres. These features make it a versatile and practical choice for commercial developments, public sector projects, and other large-scale installations where efficiency and coverage are key considerations. Both products are anti-climb, providing an additional layer of security for properties. The panels are manufactured in line
with BS1793, the British Standard for noise barriers, ensuring that they meet the necessary criteria for acoustic performance. Additionally, the panels are fully pressure- treated to the National Highways Sector Scheme (NHSS4) specifications, which contributes to their durability and long service life of up to 30 years out of ground contact. Say adds that the timber used in these panels is responsibly sourced and certified, aligning with broader industry trends towards sustainability. This aspect may appeal to customers who are increasingly prioritising environmentally responsible materials in their projects.
A quieter future
“The launch of these acoustic fence panels comes at a time when the UK market for noise barriers is experiencing steady growth. Increasing awareness of the adverse effects of noise pollution, ranging from stress and sleep disturbances to more serious health issues, has led to stricter noise control regulations,” he says. Both residential and commercial property developers are increasingly seeking solutions that comply with these regulations while also addressing community concerns about noise. The acoustic fencing market is competitive, with various products available that claim to reduce noise effectively. However, the performance of these products can vary widely, Say adds. “We have introduced this range with these factors in mind, aiming to provide solutions that balance noise reduction with durability and environmental responsibility.
