PEOPLE 10 MINUTES WITH: DUNCAN WINTER Commercial Director at SIG Roofing

What is your current role and how long have you been doing it? Commercial Director at SIG Roofing since July 2022.

What does your role entail? It’s a varied role which is one of the reasons I enjoy it, but in no particular order it’s to create team collaboration, problem solve, direct key initiatives, build supplier relationships, new product development, market trends and specialist businesses.

How did you get started in this industry? Easy answer is I was a roofer and have been in the industry since 2003.

What roles were you doing before and how did they prepare you for this one? Product training, technical sales & sales team management and director roles. They all gave me different skills and I am also fortunate to have worked with some great people in my career to guide me at key times.

What would you like to achieve in your role?

In a business the size of SIG Roofing, there are a wide range of roles & departments, so if I

can facilitate a collaborative environment that helps us better deliver goals as a team rather than individual departments, then it’s one box ticked. I want to see the SIG Roofing business continue to grow through being seen as the best route to market for suppliers, thinking local but buying nationally and investing back into the industry.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? Working with some of the people.

What do you see as the main issues for builder’s merchants and for the construction industry at the moment? People, Skills, Regulations, Technology & Economic Doubt. We need the construction industry and the people within it to be seen as key professionals by schools and universities and help create skills training for the sectors that aren’t catered for. Changes to regulations need to be communicated widely and simply to enable businesses and suppliers to support these changes. Parts of the industry have changed very little over time, and when one of the reasons to be a tradesperson is being able to create or build something with your hands,

why should it be compared to other industries? We’ve adopted every technology which could make our roles easier. Finally, the economic uncertainty has dogged the industry for many months.

If you could go back to the start of your career, what piece of advice would you give yourself? To enjoy the good days more.

What keeps you busy at the weekends? Family, dogs, garden

If you’re at the bar – what are you drinking? Ginger beer, cider, wine, rum. Depends on time of day & company I’m with.

What’s your favourite book? Can’t think of one book in particular but like Wilbur Smith and John Grisham books.

Favourite film? Meet Joe Black

If you could be a superhero, which super- power would you choose? Being able to time travel. BMJ
