FIRST PASS FOR CCPI BATTEN ASSESSMENT Shaun Revill, Trading Director SR Timber

AS THE SPEED of new product develops in the construction market increases and regulations change, reliance on manufacturer product information becomes increasingly important. When struggling to compare like with like, the last thing you need is for the product information to be vague or imprecise. Ideally, you would like all products to have the same information that is easily accessible for comparison helping you to make informed choices as to which will give the performance required for the individual application. That is what CCPI is all about, and its ultimate goal is for clients, specifiers, and users to demand only products that adhere to the Code. The CCPI was developed through industry consultation initiated by the Construction Product Association (CPA) in direct response to Dame Judith Hackitt’s review after the Grenfell tragedy and the resulting Building Safety Act. It was created by a group of manufacturers who agreed to raise standards in construction and transition the industry to a point where all product information provided by a manufacturer, merchant, or distributor adheres to this ethos. Ultimately, they seek to move the industry to a place where product information is clear, accurate, accessible, up-to-date and unambiguous.

There are two separate codes – one for manufacturers with relevant clauses covering a wide range of matters from responsibility for product information to clarity of performance claims made, general information and competency. For merchants and distributors, there is a four-clause code covering audit trails for product information, a documented sign-off process and a policy to promote the manufacturer’s CCPI to its suppliers and customers to help build momentum for the overall initiative.

At SR Timber, we were keen to go through the third-party assessment to confirm that all the product information we provided on our graded BS 5534:2014+A2:2018 PREMIUM GOLD® roofing batten adheres to the CCPI clauses. We have always agreed with the ethos of CCPI and committed to it some time ago. We worked diligently to provide evidence and information to support our adherence to the clauses. Our processes for managing product information were assessed, and we completed training for our staff and external suppliers. We were delighted to pass the robust assessment, which gives our batten recognition for providing trustworthy and accurate product information that is clear, accurate, accessible, up-to-date, and unambiguous, making it easier for purchasers to make an informed choice.

Achieving CCPI for our PREMIUM GOLD® batten was particularly

important for SR Timber at this time as since the COVID-19 pandemic, timber supply has been particularly volatile. Like many materials, demand increased, prices rocketed, and the market was flooded with new entrants and some inferior- grade roofing batten.

Correct grading

Roofing Battens carry a high weight load and must be correctly graded and impregnated to ensure they are completely fit for purpose. We recommend only sourcing and installing battens that correctly adhere to BS 5534:2014+A2:2018 grading rules and ensure that they are supplied by a reputable business with a secure and established supply chain, one that offers guidance and can clearly demonstrate the product is correctly graded. CCPI compliance can, therefore, only enhance buyer reassurance for our timber batten product information.

The CCPI may sound like another

irrelevant regulation, but it’s a logical and positive step forward once you understand its goals. It ensures that manufacturers that sign up for the verification process agree to allow independent assessors to thoroughly check the processes and systems used for preparing and publishing product information. That includes regular reviews to ensure all test data quoted in the product information is current.

There are detailed requirements around ensuring that the people writing product information are qualified, on how technical performance is described, what is covered by any warranty, and many others. The code even goes so far as to list words and phrases that should never be used because of their lack of precision.

There are some gems in this list that we all recognise, like: equivalent to, weather resistant, tolerant, cutting-edge, long-lasting, and safe. BMJ
