HEATING ELECTRIFYING

SUSTAINABLE HEATING

Heating powered by electricity is growing rapidly, fuelled by strict UK legislative targets looking to reach Net Zero gas emissions by 2050, as BMJ finds out.

ELECTRIC BENEFITS C

hange is not a choice, it is a necessity. The UK’s Net Zero gas emissions and decarbonisation targets will require the heating industry to make significant commitments to renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar. Electric Heating Systems’ Product Development Director Ross Palmer says that the current Labour government inherited policies, set in the UK’s Paris agreement of 2022, require the cutting of carbon emissions by 68% by 2030. “Switching home heating to electric can be viewed as an investment in the future for any end user or business, as electrical energy continues to reduce its environmental impact and carbon footprint, well beyond the capabilities of fossil fuels,” he says.

The Climate Change Committee’s annual progress report said that at least 3 times more renewable energy would be required by 2030 to achieve this commitment. UK Electricity generated in 2023 had a carbon intensity of 162gCO2/Kwh (Carbon Brief 3/1/24) which is at least 25% lower in emissions that the best A++ rated gas boiler. As the carbon intensity of electricity gets better every year, it will be key that we electrify heating to reduce our CO2 emissions.

Palmer adds: “At Electric Heating Systems we are committed to supply the least carbon emitting heating systems, that utilise renewable electricity from whatever source with the added ability to store that renewable energy, when it is at its most abundant and lowest cost.

“Electricity will be key to the UK leading the environmental and energy revolution and we are making the necessary changes to our equipment to achieve this whilst advising and supplying solutions that keep up to speed with the latest regulations and government policy.” Electric Heating Systems was founded with the targeted mission to supply high-quality, affordable domestic heating equipment that makes the best use of renewable resources to reduce the impact on global warming whilst keeping running costs and installation costs as low as possible, says sales and marketing director Michael Garner. “We supply trade, distribution, and merchant partners with good service and competitive, quality products, that are easy to install and use, to provide heating and hot water to any property, including holiday homes and caravans with low CO2 emissions.”

Derek Eiles, Business Development Director agrees. He adds: “It is extremely important that we do not compromise on the quality of our products or reduce our competitiveness for our customers’ end-users to achieve our sustainability and economic goals. With so many people struggling with the cost of living in recent years, it is important that both the installation cost and especially the running costs of electric heating remains affordable

•Renewable energy utilisation. Products utilise electricity for their power as it is the most renewable type of energy available. •Efficiency. Electric boilers are 99.8% efficient and the Clivet Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP), that they supply can be over 400% efficient. • Safety. No gas or oil supply is required, therefore there’s no chance of carbon monoxide or harmful gas emissions. The electric boilers have the added benefit of being able to be installed anywhere in the home. •Ease of Installation. EHS’ electric boilers are a direct swap for a gas boiler, do not require a flue, can use the existing heating plumbing and can be sited anywhere in the property. The E-Box ASHP installs can be designed and delivered with the cylinder and pipework fully assembled in an outdoor unit so that only the only pipework required to go into the house is the heating flow and return and the hot water supply. • Simple maintenance. The electric boilers contain very few moving parts and therefore there is very little to go wrong. They also require no mandatory annual gas checks.

Electric Heating Systems strategically partner with a network of merchants, trade suppliers, distributors, and many other leading companies in the heating industry. The company is determined to provide solution-based systems and in turn to help achieve the goals of sustainability, and much needed progression in the electric heating sector.

and that we continue to provide the best customer experience that we possibly can. We believe that our products can help to safeguard our future without damaging the present.” BMJ
