ROOFING PRECISION MATTERS

BMJ chats to Daniel McKane, retail sales director, YBS Insulation about the importance of getting the specification spot on.

I

nsulation is a fundamental component of a building’s structure, helping to enhance energy efficiency, reduce heat loss, and ensure that a stable, comfortable indoor environment can be maintained throughout the seasons.

In the UK, the push to improve insulation nationwide has gained significant momentum, driven in large part by the dual pressures of climate change commitments and rising cost- of-living challenges.

The £1billion Great British Insulation Scheme that aims to support 300,000 households by funding the installation of improved insulation stands as a prime example. With 80% of the homes that are expected to be in use by 2050 having already been built, it is essential to retrofit new properties as well as updating new homes.

There is still much work to be done in improving insulation. As of 2022, 60% of homes in England and Wales had a wall insulation rating of “average” or above, with this dropping to as low as 27% in London. With such a vast number of properties in need of insulation upgrades, it is essential that the right solutions are implemented at the first time of asking.

One of the most important reasons for the correct specification of insulation is energy efficiency, which is directly linked to thermal

performance. Buildings account for a large portion of global energy use, with heating and cooling making up a significant share of this. When insulation is incorrectly specified, issues such as thermal bridging or insufficient coverage can arise, allowing heat to escape. This requires heating systems to work harder, driving up energy consumption and operational costs. Conversely, by selecting insulation with the correct R-value for the climate and building type, energy loss is minimised, leading to lower energy bills. Additionally, properly specified insulation is also essential for regulating moisture levels within buildings, helping to prevent condensation that can lead to mould growth. By selecting materials tailored to the local climate and building design, moisture-related issues can be effectively managed, promoting a healthier indoor environment.

Critically, the specification process should be viewed not as a cost but as an opportunity. When insulation is correctly specified from the beginning, it minimises the need for costly retrofits and repairs. This ensures optimal building performance throughout its lifespan, delivering ongoing advantages: energy savings, comfort and environmental impact. Moreover, investing in the right insulation enhances a property’s longevity and value. Well-insulated buildings are more durable, require less maintenance and typically have higher resale values. As potential buyers increasingly prioritise energy efficiency and sustainability, correctly specified insulation will only become a significant selling point.

The case for multifoil Each project presents unique circumstances that require tailored solutions, with some options proving far more effective than others. So, where should builders’ merchants focus their efforts when supporting customers? In many cases, multifoil insulation solutions should be towards the top of the consideration list. Designed to reflect radiant heat, reduce thermal bridging and provide effective thermal insulation, they have become a popular choice for good reason.

Moisture control is another area where multifoil excels. Its multi-layered design can include moisture and vapor barriers, effectively preventing moisture ingress to protect indoor environments and building materials from damage. Furthermore, its sustainability benefits make multifoil an ideal choice for environmentally conscious consumers.

Accounting for specifics Owing to these characteristics, this type of insulation excels in many key areas while remaining a cost-effective and easy-to-install solution. It is an attractive package that meets diverse needs and preferences. However, it is still important to ensure that multifoil insulation is right for each customer’s specific project and preferences.

Merchants can offer advice in several areas. For example, it’s always important for customers to explore the required R-value of a project, installation considerations, and how such a solution would fit into the broader building envelope system.

Are space constraints a key consideration? How important is improving energy efficiency? Or providing a vapour barrier? These are some of the key questions to be answered, as well as ensuring that products are compliant with local regulations and certifications. Within the context of a growing UK focus on insulation, multifoil insulation provides a fantastic opportunity for merchants and their customers alike. BMJ
