Elvidge says that there is also a growing trend for patterned paving and outdoor tiles to add a modern style to a garden. “Porcelain comes in several different patterns and finishes, such as corten and terrazzo; recent garden designs have used these for step risers, underneath seating areas and even outdoor dancefloors.”
Popular patios
Porcelain paving has become one of the staple paving options for outdoor spaces, including driveways, and has grown in popularity over the past few years. Known for its strength and resistance to damage, porcelain is ideal for use in areas with high foot traffic or outdoor areas exposed to the elements. It’s also easy to maintain and clean, ensuring that it looks great for years to come – ticking the must- have box of a long-lasting space. Indian Sandstone remained among Marshalls’ most searched-for materials last year, and Elvidge stresses how seriously the group as a whole takes monitoring supply chains to eradicate child labour. “It’s vital to ensure that the materials you stock have been sourced ethically,” she says.

Last year there was a rise in driveway projects and quote requests, which means driveways have been bumping up priority lists. This isn’t surprising when you factor in the rise of electric vehicles and the need for off road parking as a legal requirement when charging at home.”
Driveway trends for 2023 When it comes to driveway trends, they follow the same pattern as garden trends – Elvidge
says the company is seeing grey paving and hard-wearing materials win the popularity contest. Cobble driveways also had an upswing in 2022 for the classy and unique look they can bring to a property. “People continue to ask for low- maintenance front gardens; however, there is a growing awareness of biodiversity loss, and of the risk of flooding from increasing heavy rainfall events, so we are also seeing homeowners paving around 50% of the front garden, or the minimum for a parking space, using permeable paving and leaving space for nature,” she says. n
