LANDSCAPING
STYLE STILL REIGNS SUPREME
Budgets are being squeezed, so value for money in garden landscaping becomes more important, though style remains paramount.

practicality rule out style in outdoor spaces? Johanna Elvidge, head of design at Marshalls, says not.
“If the pandemic was the period which made everyone appreciate their outdoor spaces, then this is the year that we’ll be making them work harder than ever before. As people reduce their spending on leisure activities such as mini-breaks and eating out, they’ll be choosing to entertain themselves and their guests at home instead. And whilst not everyone can afford a complete redesign, many are making smaller changes to create liveable spaces where anything they do indoors can be done outdoors,” Elvidge says.
Bring the inside outdoors Seating areas, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, and floor-like laying patterns are all must-haves for 2023. To get maximum liveability, Marshalls are finding that those with larger gardens are dividing them up to create zones for specific purposes, from outdoor cooking to play, and workspaces to

quiet areas for reflection. Larger projects like these lend themselves to a mix of materials, using different colours, textures and finishes to define the spaces.
“Where spaces are smaller, people are getting creative with more compact features to maximise what they have. Timber pergolas can be custom-built to suit the space, and raised beds are doubling up as seating areas with removable cushions,” she continues. One trend also on the rise is the use of herringbone laying patterns for garden patios and pathways, which brings the luxury feeling of indoor flooring to the outdoors. Marshalls’ new Savanna Linear range fits this trend, Elvidge says. “Made from concrete in Britain, the range offers a cost-effective and more sustainable alternative to clay and suits all property styles with its striking colours. “As a DIY option for homeowners who want a quick refresh, veneer walling continues to appeal. It sticks onto an existing surface and is a popular option for those looking for a relatively easy and cost-effective garden change and a way to spruce up older walls and flower beds.”
Grey paving remains a popular choice - there are more shades for exterior projects than ever before. As well as an on-trend
